You made a good video. Then you stared at the first line for twenty minutes.
That first line is the hook. It decides if someone stays or swipes.
Below: what the first 1 to 3 seconds have to do, 8 hook patterns, 25 hook ideas you can adapt, and a quick way to get 10 hooks for your own video.
What makes a hook work in 1 to 3 seconds
A hook is the first thing a viewer hears or reads. For TikTok, Reels and Shorts it is usually one spoken line, or a line of text on screen, or both.
The hooks people call viral hooks tend to share four traits. This is my own working checklist from posting short videos, not a study.
It is specific. "Three mistakes with sourdough" beats "baking tips".
It names who it is for. "If you sell on Etsy" makes the right person stop.
It opens a question the video answers. The viewer stays to hear the answer.
It starts with the point. No "hey guys", no "in this video", no intro music before the first word.
I have not put a "hooks raise retention by X percent" number in this post. I did not find a source I could check, so I left it out.
8 hook patterns
1. The bold claim. A flat statement that sounds wrong or surprising.
"Your phone camera is good enough. Your lighting is the problem."
2. The number. A count tells the viewer how long the payoff is.
"Four edits I make on every video."
3. The mistake. People stay to avoid doing the wrong thing.
"This is why your plants keep dying."
4. The contrarian take. Disagree with common advice.
"Stop posting every day."
5. The before and after. Show the end result first, then say how.
"This was my desk last month. This is it now."
6. The question. Ask the thing your viewer is already asking.
"Why does your hook feel boring even when the video is good?"
7. The curiosity gap. Name the thing, hold back the answer.
"There is one setting on your phone that ruins every video you film."
8. The challenge or story. A small stake or a moment in time.
"I tried to edit a reel in ten minutes. Here is what broke."

How to get 10 hooks for your own video
Templates are good. Hooks about your own topic are better.
I use the free hook generator on Ziztu. It is free, needs no signup, and gives ten hooks per run. Here is the step by step.
- Say what the video is about. One or two sentences. The page says the more specific the topic, the better the hooks. "Sourdough" is weak. "Why my sourdough loaf is flat on top" is better.
- Pick the platform and the tone. TikTok, Reels, Shorts or YouTube. Bold, curious, funny or calm.
- Press Write hooks and copy one. Each run gives ten lines, each from a different angle: a bold claim, a question, a number, a story, a contrarian take, a secret, a mistake, a before and after, a challenge and a curiosity gap.
- Run it again for ten more. Without an account you get 8 runs a day. A free account gets more.
Two cautions from the tool's own page, and I agree with both:
- No tool can promise a video will go viral. A hook helps people stay for the first seconds. The rest has to earn the view.
- The tool is told not to invent statistics or claims, but read every hook once and change anything that is not true for you.
It writes the opening line only. Check that your video delivers what the hook promises.
A simple way to test them
Pick three hooks from different patterns, for example a number, a mistake and a question. Record the same video with each opener. Post them on different days and keep the one that holds people longest in your own analytics.
Starting from a video you liked? Get its words first with a transcript tool, read how it opens, then write your own version of the idea. Do not copy the video.
If you want a different place to start, there are other good options: a notes app, a swipe file of openers you saved, or a chat assistant you already use. The free Ziztu video hook generator is the one I reach for first because it needs no login and gives ten angles at once.
Quick recap
- Hook = first 1 to 3 seconds, specific, for someone in particular, with a question the video answers.
- Learn 8 patterns, then write your own.
- Test three hooks on the same video.
Happy posting.
