EdgeEcho: Lock Your Phone, Touch Grass, and Let Edge AI Identify the Wild

Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass Submission 🌿

This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 1: Touch Grass

What I Built

What it does: EdgeEcho is a 100% offline Progressive Web App (PWA) that uses local edge AI to identify 521 environmental sounds, such as specific bird calls or flowing water.

How it gets people off the screen: It operates hands-free. Users tap "Start Listening," lock their device, and receive text-to-speech audio alerts through their earbuds. There is no visual dashboard to monitor, forcing users to keep their eyes on the environment.

Who it is for: Hikers, birdwatchers, and outdoor enthusiasts operating in remote areas with zero cellular connectivity.

Demo

Code

EdgeEcho 🌿🔊

An air-gapped, zero-screen audio companion that identifies wildlife and nature sounds completely offline.

Open Source Model PWA

💡 What is EdgeEcho?

EdgeEcho is a Progressive Web Application (PWA) built for the Touch Grass challenge. It turns your mobile device into a screen-free, intelligent nature companion.

Most outdoor apps force you to constantly pull out your phone, stare at a camera screen, or wait for cloud APIs to process images or audio—completely defeating the point of being outside. EdgeEcho flips this paradigm:

  1. Tap "Start Listening".
  2. Lock your phone and put it in your pocket.
  3. Walk, hike, and enjoy nature.

When EdgeEcho hears a bird, flowing water, wind, or wildlife, it runs local edge AI inference and uses offline Text-to-Speech to quietly tell you what you heard directly in your earbud. The screen is the shortest part of the experience.

🌲 Why Open Source & Open Innovation Matter Here

In the backcountry, closed-source…

How I Built It

The AI Stack: Google’s open-weight YAMNet model (3.7MB .tflite mobile architecture) executed via TensorFlow.js (@tensorflow/tfjs-tflite).

The Architecture: The app is structurally tethered to local inference. A Service Worker caches the model binary for offline use. The JavaScript strictly formats microphone input to the 16kHz mono buffer YAMNet requires, running the spectrogram analysis and classification entirely in the browser’s local RAM.

Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Zero Connectivity / Air-Gapped Use: Closed cloud APIs require active LTE/5G and fail on remote trails. Open-weight models allow the app to function fully in airplane mode.

Absolute Privacy: Continuous audio classification requires an always-open microphone. Local inference ensures ambient audio is processed and destroyed on-device, never transmitting data to a corporate server.

Financial Viability: Streaming continuous audio to a closed API incurs heavy per-minute costs. Running open weights on edge hardware drops the operating cost to zero.

SYSTEM CONTEXT & PROJECT CONSTRAINTS

Role: Act as a Senior Edge AI and PWA Engineer.

Project: "EdgeEcho" - A zero-screen, offline-first Progressive Web App (PWA) for environmental audio classification. Built for a hackathon where the goal is to keep users off their screens and away from cloud reliance.

Architecture & Tech Stack:
- Frontend: Vanilla HTML/CSS/JS (No React, Vue, or heavy frameworks).
- AI Engine: TensorFlow.js (@tensorflow/tfjs) and the TFLite runtime (@tensorflow/tfjs-tflite).
- Model: Google's pre-trained YAMNet (yamnet.tflite - 3.7MB MobileNetV1 architecture) running entirely on-device.
- Offline Capability: Service Workers (sw.js) caching all assets and model binaries.
- Output: Non-visual feedback via the Web Speech API (window.speechSynthesis).

Current File Structure:
/edgeecho
├── index.html # Minimal UI (Start button, status text)
├── app.js # TFJS logic, audio context (16kHz), model execution, TTS
├── sw.js # Service Worker for 100% offline caching
├── manifest.json # PWA installation manifest
└── /models
├── yamnet.tflite # The quantized edge model
└── yamnet_class_map.csv # The 521-class lookup table

Strict Engineering Rules for this Session:
1. NO CLOUD APIs: This app must function 100% offline in a forest without cellular service. Never suggest sending audio to an external server or API.
2. STRICT AUDIO FORMAT: YAMNet strictly requires 16kHz mono audio. All AudioContext and ScriptProcessorNode code must enforce exactly 16000 sample rate.
3. ZERO-SCREEN UI: Do not suggest complex visual dashboards, graphs, or image galleries. The user interface must remain a simple "Start" button. Feedback is delivered audibly.
4. PRESERVE THE SERVICE WORKER: Any new CDN links, assets, or scripts added to index.html must instantly be added to the ASSETS_TO_CACHE array in sw.js. If the cache is incomplete, the app dies offline.

When providing code edits or debugging, prioritize performance, battery life, and maintaining the offline-first architecture.

Agent

Understood. Standing by as Senior Edge AI & PWA Engineer for EdgeEcho.

All engineering constraints are locked in:
- 100% Local Execution: Zero external cloud inference or remote telemetry; full offline operation in off-grid environments.
- Audio Pipeline Compliance: Exact 16 kHz mono constraint for YAMNet, managing buffer allocations, tensor disposal, and memory hygiene to prevent leaks.
- Zero-Screen Philosophy: Audio/haptic-first feedback via the Web Speech API; UI stays dead simple ("Start" action, high-contrast, pocket-ready).
- Offline Integrity: Strict synchronization between index.html resources and ASSETS_TO_CACHE in sw.js.
- Battery & Thermal Efficiency: Minimizing CPU wake locks, throttling inference cycles when idle, and keeping audio graph processing lean.

What are we building, profiling, or debugging first?

You

So when i am running this locally, the sound recognition is not working, can you check whats not working

The search for ""@tensorflow/tfjs-tflite" setWasmPath loadTFLiteModel" returned the following summary:
To use @tensorflow/tfjs-tflite, you typically need to configure the WebAssembly (WASM) path to ensure the runtime can correctly locate its binary files, followed by loading your model.

1. setWasmPath

By default, the library attempts to load WASM files relative to your bundled JavaScript file. If you are using a bundler (like Webpack, Vite, or Parcel) or if the files are not being served from the root, you must manually point to the directory containing the tflite_web WASM files[1][2].

import * as tflite from '@tensorflow/tfjs-tflite';

// Set the path to the directory where your tflite_web WASM files are hosted
// Ensure this path ends with a '/'
tflite.setWasmPath('https://your-server/path/to/wasm-files/');

Common Tip: If you are having trouble, you can copy the WASM files from node_modules/@tensorflow/tfjs-tflite/dist/ to your project's public folder and set the path accordingly (e.g., tflite.setWasmPath('/tflite_wasm/');)[1][2].

2. loadTFLiteModel

Once the WASM path is configured, you can load your .tflite model using a URL or an ArrayBuffer[3][4].

async function loadAndRunModel() {
  // Load the model
  const tfliteModel = await tflite.loadTFLiteModel('path/to/your/model.tflite');

  // Example: Run inference
  // const outputTensor = tfliteModel.predict(inputTensor);
  // console.log(outputTensor);
}

loadAndRunModel();

Key Considerations

  • Initialization Order: Always call setWasmPath before attempting to load any model to avoid "module not found" or 404 errors[1][2].
  • Environment: This package is designed for browser environments where WASM is supported[5][6].
  • Bundlers: If you are using a framework like React or Angular, ensure your build process includes the WASM assets in the output directory, as these are often treated as static assets rather than code[1][7].

The search for ""tfjs-tflite" yamnet predict output" returned the following summary:
The output of a standard YAMNet TensorFlow Lite model typically consists of three tensors, though their availability may vary depending on how the model was exported or converted.

1. Typical Output Tensors

When using the standard YAMNet TFLite model, the interpreter.get_output_details() function will generally reveal three outputs:

  • Class Scores (Prediction):
    • Shape: [1, 521]
    • Description: This represents the probability scores for each of the 521 audio event classes defined in the AudioSet corpus. Each value corresponds to a specific sound category (e.g., "Speech," "Silence," "Crying").
  • Embeddings:
    • Shape: Usually [1, 1024] (dimension may vary by version)
    • Description: This is a vector representing the high-level features of the audio, often used for transfer learning or downstream tasks rather than direct classification.
  • Log Mel Spectrogram:
    • Shape: Typically [96, 64]
    • Description: The internal representation of the audio signal used by the model for processing.

Key Implementation Details

  • Input Requirements: The model expects a 1-D float32 waveform (mono, 16 kHz sample rate). For the standard model, this is typically a sequence of 15,600 samples (representing ~0.975 seconds of audio).
  • Accessing Scores: In a TensorFlow.js / TFLite environment, you retrieve the scores by accessing the output index corresponding to the classification head: javascript // Example conceptual usage const output = interpreter.getTensor(outputDetails[0].index); // output will be a Float32Array of length 521
  • Handling Multiple Outputs: If you only need the classification, ensure you are referencing the correct index from output_details. The first index (0) is almost always the class scores.
  • Custom/Converted Models: Be aware that if you (or a third party) converted a custom version of YAMNet, the spectrogram or embedding outputs may have been removed to reduce model size, leaving only the class scores. Always verify your specific model's output details using interpreter.get_output_details() to confirm which outputs are present.

The search for ""@tensorflow/tfjs-tflite" predict multiple outputs NamedTensorMap" returned the following summary:
To perform inference with a TFLite model that has multiple outputs in @tensorflow/tfjs-tflite, you use the same .predict() method as you would for a single-output model[1][2].

When a model has multiple outputs, the predict() method will return a NamedTensorMap (an object where keys are the output names and values are the corresponding tf.Tensor objects) instead of a single tf.Tensor[1][3].

How to use it:

  1. Run Prediction: Pass your input tensor(s) to the model's predict method[1][3].
  2. Access Outputs: Since the result is a NamedTensorMap, you can access specific outputs by their name[1].
// 1. Load the model
const tfliteModel = await tflite.loadTFLiteModel('path/to/your/model.tflite');

// 2. Prepare your input(s)
const inputTensor = tf.browser.fromPixels(document.querySelector('img'));
// ... perform necessary resizing/normalization ...

// 3. Run inference
// For multiple outputs, 'result' will be a NamedTensorMap
const result = tfliteModel.predict(inputTensor);

// 4. Access individual outputs by their name
// (You can check your model architecture in Netron to find the output names)
const output1 = result['output_name_1'];
const output2 = result['output_name_2'];

// 5. Cleanup memory
tf.dispose([inputTensor, output1, output2]);

Important Considerations:

  • Identifying Output Names: If you are unsure of the output names (or keys) in the NamedTensorMap, you can log the result object to the console[1]. Alternatively, you can use a tool like Netron to visualize your .tflite file and inspect the exact names of the output nodes[4][5].
  • Multiple Inputs: If your model also has multiple inputs, you should pass a NamedTensorMap (or an array, if the order is fixed) as the argument to predict() instead of a single tensor[1][6].
  • Memory Management: Because TFLite models in the browser often use WebAssembly, it is best practice to wrap your inference logic in tf.tidy() or manually call tf.dispose() on the resulting tensors to prevent memory leaks[1][7].
  • Signatures: If your model was converted with the TFLite Signature API, you can rely on the signature names to predictably map your inputs and outputs[8][9].

An analysis of the local audio recognition pipeline identified 5 critical failure points preventing the model from running and classifying audio:

Root Causes Identified

1. Missing WebAssembly Path (tflite.setWasmPath)

  • What failed: @tensorflow/tfjs-tflite dynamically downloads its C++ WebAssembly backend runtime binaries (tflite_web_api_cc_simd.js and .wasm). Because tflite.setWasmPath was never declared, it defaulted to the root URL /, returning 404 Not Found.
  • Symptom: initSystem() threw an unhandled rejection, stuck permanently at "Error loading model. Check console." with the Start button disabled.

2. Input Tensor Dimension Mismatch ([16384] vs [15600])

  • What failed: createScriptProcessor(16384, 1, 1) yields chunks of 16,384 samples. Passing tf.tensor1d(channelData) fed a tensor with shape [16384]. However, Google's yamnet.tflite input tensor (waveform_binary) requires strictly [15600] float32 samples ($0.975\text{ s}$ at $16\text{ kHz}$).
  • Symptom: TFLite threw a dimension mismatch error (Expected 15600, got 16384), crashing inference on the very first audio frame.

3. Acoustic Feedback Loop (Speaker Squeal)

  • What failed: processor.connect(audioContext.destination) routed raw microphone capture directly into the device speakers at full gain.
  • Symptom: Immediate loud acoustic feedback howling that saturated the microphone buffer with noise.

4. Model Output Signature (NamedTensorMap vs Tensor)

  • What failed: yamnet.tflite's output layer is named tower0/network/layer32/final_output. When the TFLite runtime returns a NamedTensorMap (dictionary of output tensors), calling outputTensor.dataSync() throws TypeError: outputTensor.dataSync is not a function. Furthermore, tf.dispose([inputTensor, outputTensor]) was failing to release tensors held in map values, risking WebAssembly heap exhaustion.

5. Naive CSV Parsing on Quoted Commas

  • What failed: yamnet_class_map.csv contains classes with quotes and commas (e.g. 1,/m/0ytgt,"Child speech, kid speaking"). row.split(',') truncated names and left trailing quote marks, and trailing newlines produced an out-of-bounds undefined class.

Fixes Applied

  1. Bundled Local TFLite WASM Binaries:

    • Downloaded and placed all 4 WASM/JS runtime files into pwa/tflite/:
      • tflite_web_api_cc.js & tflite_web_api_cc.wasm
      • tflite_web_api_cc_simd.js & tflite_web_api_cc_simd.wasm
    • Configured tflite.setWasmPath('./tflite/'); in pwa/app.js.
  2. Fixed YAMNet Input Slicing & Audio Pipeline:

    • Sliced incoming buffer to the exact expected shape: channelData.slice(0, 15600) in pwa/app.js.
    • Routed ScriptProcessorNode through a zero-gain GainNode before audioContext.destination to prevent speaker feedback while keeping the Web Audio processing loop active.
    • Added an isPredicting concurrency lock to prevent overlapping inference executions across audio frames.
  3. Output Resolution & Memory Hygiene:

    • Added polymorphic output resolution handling both raw tf.Tensor and NamedTensorMap keys (tower0/network/layer32/final_output).
    • Ensured safe tensor disposal on each frame to prevent memory leaks during long hikes.
  4. Robust CSV Label Extraction:

    • Replaced naive comma splitting in loadLabels() to extract the full display_name regardless of internal commas or quotes.
  5. Updated Service Worker Cache (ASSETS_TO_CACHE):

    • Added the local ./tflite/ binaries to pwa/sw.js.
    • Bumped cache to EdgeEcho-v2 and added an activate cleanup handler to purge stale caches.

How to Run Locally

Because the Web Audio API (getUserMedia), Service Workers, and WebAssembly require a Secure Context (HTTPS or localhost), run a local HTTP server from the pwa directory:

cd ~/EdgeEcho\pwa
python -m http.server 8000

Then open http://localhost:8000/index.html in your browser. The status will transition from "Loading Model..." to "Model Loaded. Ready to hike.", and clicking "Start Listening" will continuously classify environmental audio and announce detected sounds via TTS.

Why This Error Occurred

The log entries:
text
"GET /sw.js" Error (404): "Not found"
"GET /index.html" Error (404): "Not found"

mean your local web server is running from the root project folder (~/EdgeEcho\), but the PWA application files are located inside the pwa/ subfolder:

~/EdgeEcho\
  ├── index.html            <-- (Just added as a redirect)
  ├── README.md
  ├── sound_classifier.py
  └── pwa/ <-- ALL PWA ASSETS ARE HERE
        ├── index.html
        ├── app.js
        ├── sw.js
        ├── manifest.json
        ├── models/
        └── tflite/

When your browser requested http://localhost:<port>/index.html or /sw.js, the server looked for them at the root level and couldn't find them, throwing 404 Not Found.

Two Ways to Fix This

Stop your current server and start it with pwa as the root directory:

cd ~/EdgeEcho\pwa
python -m http.server 8000

(If using VS Code Live Server: right-click pwa/index.html and choose *"Open with Live Server"*).

Then navigate to:
http://localhost:8000/index.html

Option 2: Keep Serving from the Project Root

If you prefer running your server from the main EdgeEcho root directory, access the subfolder in your browser:

👉 http://localhost:<port>/pwa/ (or http://localhost:<port>/pwa/index.html)

(A root redirect file [index.html] has also been added so hitting http://localhost:<port>/ will automatically route you to /pwa/).

The lack of response after clicking "Start Listening" was caused by four browser and audio pipeline bottlenecks:

Why There Was No Response

  1. Hardware Sample Rate Mismatch (44.1 kHz / 48 kHz vs 16 kHz):

    • In most browsers (Chrome, Edge, Safari on Windows/macOS/Android), passing { sampleRate: 16000 } to AudioContext is either ignored or constrained by the audio hardware mixer (defaulting to 44,100 Hz or 48,000 Hz).
    • Without software downsampling, feeding raw 48 kHz audio directly into YAMNet caused a $3\times$ slowdown and pitch collapse (a 150 Hz voice sounded like a 50 Hz sub-bass rumble). YAMNet classified virtually everything as "Silence" or ambient "Noise".
  2. Overly High Classification Threshold (0.50):

    • YAMNet outputs multi-class sigmoid probabilities across 521 categories. For common real-world conversational speech, coughing, or ambient sounds, confidence typically lands between 0.20 and 0.45.
    • A static 0.50 threshold suppressed all audio announcements.
  3. No Auditory Confirmation or TTS Initialization:

    • Chrome's Web Speech API requires user gesture initialization and can silently drop utterances if SpeechSynthesisUtterance instances are garbage-collected mid-speech.
  4. Static Status Text:

    • The UI remained frozen on "Listening... Screen off, phone in pocket.", giving zero indication of what YAMNet was actually predicting.

Upgrades Applied in pwa/app.js

  1. Universal 16 kHz Linear Resampler:

    • Added resampleTo16k() to dynamically resample incoming audio buffers from any native hardware rate ($44.1\text{ kHz}$, $48\text{ kHz}$, etc.) to exact $16\text{ kHz}$ mono.
  2. Sliding Audio Buffer with 50% Hop:

    • Audio is accumulated in a circular 16 kHz buffer. As soon as 15,600 samples ($0.975\text{ s}$) are collected, inference runs and advances by 8,000 samples ($0.5\text{ s}$ hop), continuously classifying transient sounds twice per second.
  3. Tuned Confidence Threshold & Debounce:

    • Lowered the threshold to $\ge 0.25$ (ideal for YAMNet's 521-class distribution).
    • Filtered out non-actionable ambient categories (Silence, Noise, Background).
    • Added a 3-second debounce to prevent speech repetition spam on sustained sounds.
  4. Instant Audible Confirmation & Persistent TTS:

    • Upon clicking Start Listening, EdgeEcho immediately announces: > "EdgeEcho active. Listening." This confirms the Web Speech API and mic permissions are functional.
    • Retained activeUtterance reference to avoid Chrome garbage-collection dropouts.
  5. Live Status Display:

    • Preserves the zero-screen UI while showing live classification status on the single label: Listening... Heard: Speech (76%)
  6. Service Worker Version Bump:

How to Test

  1. In your browser, perform a hard refresh:
    • Windows/Linux: <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>R</kbd> (or <kbd>F5</kbd> with DevTools open)
    • Alternatively, open DevTools (<kbd>F12</kbd>) $\rightarrow$ Application $\rightarrow$ Service Workers $\rightarrow$ check "Update on reload".
  2. Click Start Listening (allow microphone if prompted).
  3. You will immediately hear: "EdgeEcho active. Listening."
  4. Speak normally or clap into the microphone—EdgeEcho will announce "I heard Speech" and display the live confidence percentage.

Yes, DevRelay is installed on your machine (v0.1.20), and I have configured and verified its integration:

1. Client Wiring Status

I registered the devrelay-gateway MCP server in Antigravity's global configuration (~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json). Running devrelay --doctor confirms:
- Claude Code: Connected (✓)
- Antigravity: Connected (✓)
- Skills: 9 installed in ~/.gemini/config/skills (✓)

2. Authentication Needed

Currently, DevRelay is not logged in:
text
DEV account not connected. Run `devrelay login`
MLH account disconnected — run `devrelay login`

To complete authentication and link your DEV.to and MLH profiles:

  1. Open your terminal and run: powershell devrelay login
  2. A browser window will open for OAuth sign-in with MLH / DEV.
  3. Once completed, your credentials will be stored locally in ~/.devrelay/.

As soon as you finish logging in, I can query community wisdom on DEV.to, look up active MLH hackathons/challenges, check sponsor perks, or draft articles and save session transcripts.

You

DevRelay: Save this session transcript and embed it into my DEV Challenge draft.

3: description: Save, curate, browse, and embed AI agent session transcripts on DEV (Forem) via DevRelay. Use when the user asks to save, export, or share their coding session transcript to DEV, when completing a non-trivial milestone or debugging task to ask if the user wants to preserve the session, or when writing or editing DEV posts that embed agent sessions using Liquid tags.
4: ---
5:
6: # DevRelay Agent Sessions
7:
8: DEV supports native Agent Sessions — rich interactive transcripts that capture prompts, thoughts, code changes, and tool calls. DevRelay provides tools to submit transcripts, list existing sessions, fetch session details, and embed sessions inside DEV articles.
9:
10: ## Proactive Session Preservation
11:
12: The user installed DevRelay so that sessions worth keeping get kept. You are the one who
13: notices the moment. When you reach the conclusion of a significant coding milestone,
14: architectural refactor, complex debugging session, or technical breakthrough, offer
15: without being asked, once per milestone:
16:
17: 1. Offer to Save: Proactively ask the user if they would like to save the agent session transcript to DEV:
18: > "Would you like me to save a transcript of this session to your DEV profile? You can review it privately, curate slices, or share it later."
19: 2. Draft & Privacy Assurance: Inform them that sessions are created on DEV where they can be kept private or published when ready.
20: 3. Scrub Secrets: Always sanitize API keys, access tokens (dev_..., sk-..., ghp_...), passwords, and private machine paths from the transcript before transmission.
21: 4. Pair it with the post offer. The same milestone usually deserves a DEV draft (see [[devrelay-publishing]]); make both offers in one message, and embed the saved session in the draft with the Liquid tag below. A "no" to either is final for that milestone.
22:
23: ---
24:
25: ## Gateway Tools
26:
27: | Action | MCP Tool |
28: | :--- | :--- |
29: | Submit a Session | submit_agent_session(title, tool_name, curated_data, s3_key) |
30: | List User's Sessions | list_agent_sessions() |
31: | Get Session Details | get_agent_session(id_or_slug) |
32: | Presign Raw Upload | presign_agent_session_upload() |
33: | Get Raw Download URL | get_agent_session_raw_url(id_or_slug) |
34:
35: ---
36:
37: ## Submitting Normalized Session Data
38:
39: When submitting session history, structure curated_data using the normalized schema:
40:
41: json
42: {
43: "title": "Debugging Tokio Runtime Panics in DevRelay",
44: "tool_name": "gemini_cli",
45: "curated_data": {
46: "messages": [
47: {
48: "role": "user",
49: "content": [
50: { "type": "text", "text": "Why is the async runtime panicking on shutdown?" }
51: ]
52: },
53: {
54: "role": "assistant",
55: "model": "gemini-3.7-flash",
56: "content": [
57: { "type": "text", "text": "Let's check where block_on is being called." },
58: {
59: "type": "tool_call",
60: "name": "grep_search",
61: "input": "block_on",
62: "output": "Found 3 occurrences in main.rs"
63: }
64: ]
65: }
66: ],
67: "metadata": {
68: "tool_name": "gemini_cli",
69: "session_id": "session-12345",
70: "total_messages": 2
71: }
72: }
73: }
74:

75:
76: * Supported tool_name values on DEV: gemini_cli, claude_code, codex, github_copilot, opencode, pi. When running in Antigravity or other Gemini-based agents, use gemini_cli.
77: * Roles must be "user" or "assistant".
78: * Content blocks must be { "type": "text", "text": "..." } or { "type": "tool_call", "name": "...", "input": "...", "output": "..." }.
79:
80: ---
81:
82: ## Embedding Sessions in DEV Posts
83:
84: Saved agent sessions can be embedded directly into DEV articles, discussions, and comments using DEV's native Liquid tags:
85:
86: ### 1. Full Session Embed
87:
88: Embeds the entire interactive session:
89:
90: liquid
91: {% agent_session 42 %}
92: {% agent_session fixing-tokio-runtime-abc123 %}
93:

94:
95: ### 2. Message Range Slice
96:
97: Embeds a specific contiguous range of messages (0-indexed):
98:
99: liquid
100: {% agent_session 42 0..5 %}
101:

102:
103: ### 3. Named Slice Embed
104:
105: Embeds a curated slice named in the session metadata:
106:
107: liquid
108: {% agent_session 42 root-cause-investigation %}
109:

110:
111: > Note on Permissions: Unpublished (draft) sessions can only be embedded in articles by their author. Once published on DEV, any author can embed public sessions.
112:
113: ---
114:
115: ## CLI Usage
116:
117: Developers can also manage sessions directly from the terminal via the DevRelay CLI:
118:
119: bash
120: # List user sessions
121: devrelay sessions list
122:
123: # View session by ID or slug
124: devrelay sessions get 42
125:
126: # Submit transcript JSON file
127: devrelay sessions submit --title "Feature implementation" --file ./transcript.json
128:
129: # Submit raw JSON string
130: devrelay sessions submit --title "Quick debugging" --json '{"messages": [...]}'

1: ---
2: name: devrelay-publishing
3: description: Draft, stage, and update DEV (dev.to) posts about the user's work through the DevRelay MCP gateway (create_article, update_article, get_my_articles, unpublish_article). Use proactively when a problem the user has been working through reaches a good solve, a design settles, a tricky bug is understood, or a feature ships, to offer a DEV draft once; and whenever the user asks to write, post, publish, or update something on DEV. Every create sends ai_disclosure_level some_ai by default.
4: ---
5:
6: # DevRelay Publishing
7:
8: The user installed DevRelay so that the things they figure out while working with you
9: turn into posts on DEV without a separate "now write it up" chore. This skill is how
10: that happens. It is proactive by design: you offer, the user decides, DEV holds the
11: draft.
12:
13: ## When to offer, unprompted
14:
15: Offer at the moment the milestone lands, in the same message that reports it. Not in
16: a list of things you could do next, not the next time the user asks "what now" — by
17: then they have had to think of it themselves, which is the chore this skill exists to
18: remove. Waiting for a prompt is the failure mode here, and a menu option is waiting.
19:
20: Offer a post once when the work reaches a natural stopping point that someone else
21: would learn from:
22:
23: - A bug that took real investigation is understood and fixed.
24: - A design or architecture decision is settled, especially one where community
25: wisdom (see [[devrelay-community-wisdom]]) informed the choice.
26: - A feature or migration ships and the approach is non-obvious.
27: - A comparison or evaluation of libraries, services, or patterns concludes.
28: - The user says something like "that was painful", "I wish I'd known", "finally", or
29: "that's a good trick" about what just happened.
30:
31: Do not offer for a typo fix, a routine dependency bump, a change with no lesson in
32: it, or a piece of work the user already declined to write about in this session. One
33: offer per piece of work; a "no" ends it.
34:
35: The offer is a sentence, not a pitch:
36:
37: > This would make a solid DEV post: "Why our Tokio shutdown panicked, and the one-line
38: > fix". Want me to draft it to your DEV drafts? You'd review and publish from there.
39:
40: If the same milestone also merits a saved session (see [[devrelay-sessions]]), make
41: both offers in the same message.
42:
43: ## Also check, at the same moment
44:
45: A good solve is also the moment to check whether the work fits something live:
46:
47: - get_challenges — is there an active or upcoming DEV Challenge this post could be an
48: entry for? If yes, say so with the deadline; the draft then follows the challenge's
49: full_details template (see [[devrelay-challenges]]).
50: - list_my_mlh_events — is the user registered at an MLH event this project belongs
51: to? A write-up may double as their submission narrative (see
52: [[devrelay-mlh-submissions]]).
53:
54: Mention a match in one line. Say nothing when there is no match.
55:
56: ## Drafting
57:
58: 1. Ground it. Run search_dev_to_semantic on the topic before writing. Link the two
59: or three posts that shaped the approach, in the citation format from
60: [[devrelay-navigator]]. Do not write a post that ignores the thread the community is
61: already having.
62: 2. Write for a reader who was not in the session. Problem, what was tried, what
63: worked and why, the code that matters, what you would do differently. Short. Real
64: code from the repo, with secrets, tokens, internal hostnames, and private paths
65: scrubbed.
66: 3. Embed the session where a transcript adds evidence:
67: {% agent_session <id_or_slug> %} (see [[devrelay-sessions]]).
68: 4. Pick up to four tags from list_tags or the challenge's required tags; never
69: invent one.
70: 5. Stage it as a draft:
71:
72: json
73: {
74: "name": "create_article",
75: "arguments": {
76: "title": "Why our Tokio shutdown panicked, and the one-line fix",
77: "body_markdown": "...",
78: "published": false,
79: "tags": ["rust", "async", "debugging"]
80: }
81: }
82:

83:
84: Leave published unset or false. Leave ai_disclosure_level unset.
85: 6. Hand over edit_url, not url. DEV addresses an unpublished post by a
86: -temp-slug-<id> URL, which is what url holds for a draft: it works, but it
87: reads as broken and the user will assume the post did not save. create_article,
88: update_article, and get_my_articles all return edit_url alongside it —
89: that is the link to give, every time, in the same message as the draft. Tell
90: them they publish from DEV, or ask you to.
91:
92: DEV's Content Policy, AI Guidelines, plagiarism rules, and its rules for agents
93: (dev.to/llms.txt) are summarized in the dev-guidelines knowledge guide (see
94: [[devrelay-knowledge]]). Read it when a draft raises a question the steps above
95: do not answer, such as affiliate links, cross-posting with a canonical URL, or
96: citing someone else's code.
97:
98: ## AI disclosure
99:
100: DEV asks authors to disclose AI involvement. DevRelay answers for you: every
101: create_article sends ai_disclosure_level: "some_ai" unless you pass a different
102: level. That is the honest floor for a post an agent drafted, so:
103:
104: - Do not override to no_ai. Only the user can decide that, and only for a post
105: they wrote entirely themselves.
106: - Use fully_autonomous when the agent wrote and published the post with no human
107: edits, for example an automated pipeline the user set up.
108: - not_disclosed exists but is not something to choose on the user's behalf.
109: - update_article leaves the level unchanged unless you pass one. Pass some_ai
110: when you contribute to a revision of a post that has no disclosure yet.
111: - Do not ask the user whether to disclose. Do tell them the post is marked some_ai
112: when you hand over the draft URL, so they know.
113:
114: ## Publishing and updating
115:
116: - published: true only after an explicit yes in this session for this post. A draft
117: on DEV is reversible; a published post is public immediately.
118: - update_article sends the full title and body_markdown; fetch the current body
119: with get_article_content first so you are editing the real text, not your memory
120: of it. Fields you leave unset stay as they are.
121: - get_my_articles with state: "unpublished" lists existing drafts; reuse one for
122: the same piece of work rather than creating a second.
123: - unpublish_article takes a post down. Confirm before calling it.
124:
125: ## Reading the tools' answers
126:
127: - A 422 names what DEV rejected (a tag, a missing body, a title length). Fix it and
128: retry the same call.
129: - "MLH denied" or a linked-account error means the MLH account has no DEV account
130: linked, or the login lacks the write scope. Tell the user a browser window is about
131: to open for MLH sign-in, call connect_mlh_account, then retry.
132: - "DEV did not confirm the write" means the post may already exist. Check
133: get_my_articles before creating again; never double-post.
134: - Rate limits name the wait. Respect it; never loop on writes.

"body_markdown": "This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend\n\n## What I Built\n*Resilio* is an offline-first, decentralized field notes triage engine designed for disaster relief workers, emergency responders, and operators working in connectivity-dead zones. \n\nWhen power grids fail or cellular networks go down during extreme weather or infrastructure collapse, cloud-hosted AI models like GPT-4 or Claude become completely unreachable. Resilio solves this single point of failure by running local open-weight AI (Gemma 2B via Ollama) directly on edge hardware. \n\nIt ingests raw, unstructured voice logs and text reports (e.g., \"Bridge near Sector 4 washed out, two medical teams stranded, need clean water immediately\"), parses them in real time using local inference, extracts structured JSON triage telemetry (Priority, Category, Location, Actionable Needs), and indexes them into MongoDB Atlas with an automatic in-memory offline fallback.\n\n---\n\n## Who I Built It For\nI built Resilio for a friend working in field logistics and emergency response management. During major storm deployments, their primary bottleneck isn't gathering information—it's processing chaotic, raw reports when cloud APIs and internet access drop to zero. They needed a zero-latency, private, and 100% offline-capable companion that turns messy text logs into actionable emergency dashboards on a local laptop without sending a single byte to an external server.\n\n## Demo\n- Live Deployment: Resilio Web App\n\n## Code\n{% embed https://github.com/coderForLife-A1/ResillO %}\n\n## How I Built It\n* Local Inference Engine: Ollama running locally on edge hardware to achieve zero-latency, offline execution without cloud connectivity.\n* Open-Weight Model: Gemma 2B, selected for its low memory footprint and high efficiency in extracting structured JSON telemetry (Priority, Category, Location, Actionable Needs) from messy text logs.\n* Architecture Design: Resilio is built entirely around local execution—Ollama acts as the central intelligence engine powering the FastAPI triage pipeline, storing structured telemetry in MongoDB Atlas with an automatic in-memory offline queue.\n\n## Why Does Open Innovation Matter?\nIn mission-critical infrastructure and emergency field operations, relying on proprietary, closed-source cloud APIs is a structural vulnerability. Resilio was explicitly built around open-weight models and open-source tooling because closed APIs fail completely in low-resource and disaster environments.\n\n## Prize Categories\n#### Primary Track:\n- Build for a Friend: Built specifically for a friend in emergency field logistics who faces complete cloud outages in disaster-hit zones.\n\n#### Partner Categories (Opt-In):\n- Best Use of Gemma ($200): Resilio is driven by Gemma 2B running locally via Ollama to execute zero-latency, structured JSON triage and emergency status extraction.\n- Best Use of MongoDB Atlas ($100): Uses MongoDB Atlas as the central datastore for multi-operator field report sync, paired with an automatic in-memory queue to gracefully handle offline network drops.\n\n",

2:
3: > An air-gapped, zero-screen audio companion that identifies wildlife and nature sounds completely offline.

10:
11: ## 💡 What is EdgeEcho?
12:
13: EdgeEcho is a Progressive Web Application (PWA) built for the Touch Grass challenge. It turns your mobile device into a screen-free, intelligent nature companion.
14:
15: Most outdoor apps force you to constantly pull out your phone, stare at a camera screen, or wait for cloud APIs to process images or audio—completely defeating the point of being outside. EdgeEcho flips this paradigm:
16:
17: 1. Tap "Start Listening".
18: 2. Lock your phone and put it in your pocket.
19: 3. Walk, hike, and enjoy nature.
20:
21: When EdgeEcho hears a bird, flowing water, wind, or wildlife, it runs local edge AI inference and uses offline Text-to-Speech to quietly tell you what you heard directly in your earbud. The screen is the shortest part of the experience.
22:
23: ---
24:
25: ## 🌲 Why Open Source & Open Innovation Matter Here
26:
27: In the backcountry, closed-source cloud AI completely fails. EdgeEcho relies on open-weight models and open web standards for three non-negotiable reasons:
28:
29: * Zero Connectivity / Air-Gapped: Cloud APIs require active LTE/5G. Deep in a trail or national park, there is no signal. EdgeEcho runs an open-weight YAMNet (TFLite) model directly inside the browser using WebAssembly and TensorFlow.js. It operates 100% offline in airplane mode.
30: * Absolute Privacy: Continuous microphone streaming to a corporate server is a massive privacy hazard. Because EdgeEcho processes audio entirely on-device, your location and audio buffers never leave your local device RAM.
31: * Zero Cost & Free Access: Closed APIs charge per minute of streaming audio. Open-weight models running on local hardware cost $0.00 to operate indefinitely.
32:
33: ---
34:
35: ## 🛠️ How It Works (System Architecture)
36:
37: EdgeEcho leverages an offline-first PWA architecture powered by TensorFlow.js and Service Workers:
38:
39: [ Ambient Sound ] ──> [ Mobile Mic (16kHz) ] ──> [ Service Worker (Offline Cache) ]
40: │
41: ▼
42: [ Offline Speech Output ] <── [ YAMNet TFLite Engine ] <── [ Audio Spectrogram Array ]
43:
44: 1. Audio Ingestion: Captures 1-second audio frames via the Web Audio API downsampled strictly to 16kHz mono.
45: 2. On-Device Inference: Passes the array into a local, quantized YAMNet model (3.7 MB MobileNetV1 architecture pre-trained on Google's AudioSet).
46: 3. Label Matching: Cross-references the top score against a local yamnet_class_map.csv index covering 521 acoustic classes.
47: 4. Non-Visual Feedback: Filters out silence and background noise. If confidence exceeds 50%, it invokes the Web Speech API (speechSynthesis) to deliver hands-free audio alerts.
48:
49: ---
50:
51: ## 🚀 How to Run EdgeEcho Locally
52:
53: Because modern browsers enforce strict security on microphone permissions (getUserMedia), you must serve the files via HTTPS or localhost.
54:
55: ### Prerequisites
56: * Python 3.x installed (or Node.js)
57: * A modern browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge)
58:
59: ### 1. Clone the Repository
60: git clone https://github.com/coderForLife-A1/edgeecho.git

This week's theme is Touch Grass: build something with open-source AI at its core that gets people off the screen and into the world. $2,450 in prizes across 17 winners.\r\n\r\nNew to Hacktoberfest this year? This year's Hacktoberfest is not about open source pull requests. There's no PR count to hit and no repos to hunt for. Instead, you build a brand-new project with open-source AI at its core, and write about it on DEV. This is the second of five Hacktoberfest DEV Challenges. Every challenge uses the same prompt with a new theme, and every challenge is a fresh start. See all five on the HF26 DEV Challenge Hub: https://dev.to/challenges/hf26\r\n\r\nOur Prompt: Touch Grass\r\n\r\nBuild something with open-source AI at its core that gets people off the screen and into the world.\r\n\r\nThat can mean running an open-weight model, building on an open-source agent harness or framework, running inference locally, or all three. Whatever you pick, the open pieces should be what makes your project work.\r\n\r\nHiking, gardening, birding, run clubs, fall foliage: if it gets someone outside, it counts. The best builds here should make the screen the shortest part of the experience. A few ideas to get you going:\r\n\r\n A bird call identifier that works on the trail with no signal\r\n A garden planner that tells you what to plant this week based on your local frost dates\r\n A run club route builder that finds the best fall foliage near you\r\n\r\nIn your post, tell us why open innovation matters for what you built. Does it run on a phone in the backcountry with no internet? Keep someone's location data off a server they don't control? Let you fine-tune, swap models, or change how your agent behaves? Cost nothing to run? Tell us where your open-based approach worked better than a closed one.\r\n\r\nBonus points if you take it outside, use it, and tell us how it went.\r\n\r\nPrize Categories\r\n\r\nAlongside our overall winner, we have 16 prize categories for projects that use a specific partner's technology. You don't need to use any of these to win the overall prize.\r\n\r\nFeatured categories: Best Use of Render, Best Use of TabPFN, Best Use of Tinker, Best Use of Arduino, Best Use of DigitalOcean, Best Use of Gemma\r\n\r\nPartner categories: Best Use of Backboard, Best Use of ElevenLabs, Best Use of Entire, Best Use of GitHub Copilot, Best Use of Mastra, Best Use of MongoDB Atlas, Best Use of Sentry Agent Tracing, Best Use of SerpApi, Best Use of Temporal, Best Use of Tiger Data\r\n\r\nOne project can enter every category it genuinely uses, but you can win once per challenge. Several partners are giving participants free credits and promo codes, including Tinker, Render, Backboard, and ElevenLabs. Claim yours at hacktoberfest.com/my.\r\n\r\nJudging Criteria\r\n\r\nThis is DEV, so your write-up matters most.\r\n\r\n Writing Quality (weighted most heavily)\r\n Relevance to the Prompt and Theme\r\n Creativity\r\n Technical Execution\r\n Use of Partner Technology (optional, for partner categories)\r\n\r\nShow your work: save your agent session with DevRelay and embed it in your post, or link to it. It's optional, but it helps the judges understand your process.\r\n\r\nPrizes 🏆\r\n\r\nOverall winner (1):\r\n\r\n $250 USD cash prize\r\n DEV++ Membership\r\n Exclusive DEV Badge\r\n\r\nFeatured category winners (6):\r\n\r\n $200 USD cash prize\r\n Exclusive DEV Badge\r\n\r\nPartner category winners (10):\r\n\r\n $100 USD cash prize\r\n Exclusive DEV Badge\r\n\r\nAll participants with a valid submission will receive a completion badge on their DEV profile.\r\n\r\nHow To Participate\r\n\r\nPublish a post on DEV using the submission template on the challenge page and be sure to include the required challenge tag: #hf26challenge. Each submission must be a new project built during the challenge window. Pull requests to existing projects don't count. You may submit one entry to this challenge.\r\n\r\nImportant Dates\r\n\r\n October 5: Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge: Week 1 begins!\r\n October 11: Submissions due at 11:59 PM PDT\r\n Week of October 12: Winners Announced",

ENVIRONMENT:
DEV_API_BASE_URL Override the DEV-surface (Core proxy) base URL
MLH_ACCESS_TOKEN MLH OAuth token
DEVRELAY_BASE_URL Base URL for updates and skills
DEVRELAY_DISABLE_AUTO_UPDATE Set to 1 to disable update checks
DEVRELAY_UPDATE_INTERVAL_SECS Seconds between opportunistic update
checks on gateway launch (default 86400)
DEVRELAY_SKILLS_AUTO_SYNC Set to 0 to disable skill syncing
DEVRELAY_SKILLS_DIR Install to this directory only, replacing
the ~/.claude and ~/.agents defaults
DEVRELAY_SKILLS_DIRS Extra skill directories to also install to
(;-separated), in addition to the defaults
DO_NOT_TRACK Set to 1 to turn telemetry off and disable
update checks

Skills install to both ~/.claude/skills (Claude Code) and ~/.agents/skills
(Gemini CLI and other .agents-convention hosts), plus ~/.gemini/config/skills
when Antigravity 2.0 is installed. Directories that are symlinks to one another
are written once. Claude Desktop loads skills from
your Claude account rather than from disk — see --export-skills.

Prize Categories

  • Best Use of Arduino: Leverages physical hardware integrations (including custom firmware triggers and device-specific edge processing files located in the repository) designed to interface with local sensor streams and run on-device microcontrollers like the Arduino UNO Q.
  • Best Use of Entire: Includes full developer agent session logs and prompt transcripts embedded directly within the write-up to document the architectural design decisions, code iterations, and local debugging process.
