As developers, we spend a surprising amount of time optimizing things that save a few milliseconds, yet many of us wear the same stretched-out T-shirt until it practically becomes part of the deployment pipeline.
A while ago I realized something funny about my wardrobe.
I'd tried building a capsule wardrobe, but it ended up being almost entirely T-shirts.
At first I thought I'd done something wrong.
Turns out, I hadn't.
A good T-shirt is probably the highest ROI item in a casual wardrobe. You wear it while working from home, grabbing coffee, traveling, running errands, or throwing on a blazer for a quick dinner. The trick isn't owning dozens of them—it's choosing the right ones.
Think Like You're Reviewing Code
Most people shop by brand.
I'd argue you should shop by specifications.
Instead of asking:
"Who made this?"
Ask:
- How heavy is the fabric?
- What is it made from?
- How is it stitched?
- Does the collar recover after washing?
- Does the fit work for your body?
Those details matter far more than the logo on the chest.
Fit Is Your First Unit Test
Before looking at colors or graphics, check the shoulders.
If the shoulder seam sits exactly where your shoulder ends, you're already halfway there.
Next, look at the sleeves.
They shouldn't squeeze your arms, but they also shouldn't flap around like wings.
Finally, pay attention to the length.
A shirt that reaches around the middle of your zipper usually works with jeans, chinos, and shorts without looking oversized.
Simple checks.
Big difference.
Fabric Is the Real Performance Metric
This is where most inexpensive T-shirts fail.
Thin fabric may feel soft in the store, but after several washes it often twists, shrinks, or becomes semi-transparent.
For everyday wear, I've found these materials consistently work well:
- 100% combed cotton
- Cotton-poly blends for easier maintenance
- Heavyweight cotton around 180–220 GSM
Higher GSM doesn't necessarily mean hotter.
Often it simply means the shirt hangs better and keeps its shape longer.

Naturally, my brain turned it into pseudocode.

Obviously fashion isn't that deterministic.
But surprisingly...this simple checklist filters out most bad purchases.
Stop Buying Every Color
When I cleaned out my closet, I noticed something.
I owned plenty of shirts.
I just didn't wear most of them.
Now I mostly stick to neutral colors:
- Black
- White
- Heather gray
- Navy
- Olive
Every one of them works with jeans, chinos, joggers, or shorts.
Decision fatigue disappears.
The Construction Details Nobody Talks About
After enough washes, you start noticing quality differences.
Things I pay attention to now:
- Double-stitched hems
- Ribbed collars that don't stretch
- Consistent stitching
- Fabric that doesn't twist after washing
None of these features are exciting.
All of them matter after six months.
My Current Rule
I don't buy a T-shirt unless I can picture wearing it in at least three situations:
- Working from home
- Going out casually
- Traveling
If it only works for one occasion, it probably stays on the rack.
Final Thoughts
Like software, good design is often invisible.
The best T-shirt isn't the loudest one.
It's the one you instinctively reach for because it fits well, feels comfortable, and still looks good after dozens of washes.
