Claudeonomics - AI Code Editors

For developers, an IDE is a lot like a pet. You pick it, you get used to its quirks, you defend it in arguments, and you don’t give it up easily

And now is the time to pick a new friend.

There are roughly 10 standalone AI Code Editors and more than 25 AI Coding tools overall and then don't forget Plug inside your favorite IDE like Eclipse, JetBrains and plugin you already use- Tabnine, Augument, GitHub CoPilot etc inside them .

Cursor: still the default most reviewers recommend. It’s now owned by SpaceX after the acquisition closed in August.

Windsurf: it’s now transitioning under the Devin Desktop brand.

Google Antigravity: rather than one AI helping you with one task, it can run several agents simultaneously, each working on a different task in a different workspace.

Amazon Kiro: a VS Code fork from AWS that replaced Amazon Q Developer as Amazon’s flagship agentic IDE. It focuses on writing a spec before generating code.

Trae (ByteDance): the budget option, with plans as low as $3/mo.

Zed: a Rust-built, GPU-accelerated code editor created by the original Atom team. Zed also authored the Agent Client Protocol, letting you plug Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode into a native Rust editor. The same team has also released Delta, a separate multiplayer agent environment.

Smaller ones: PearAI and Void, both open-source VS Code forks.

In January 2026, Chintan Turakhia, who leads AI acceleration at Coinbase, told his engineers to delete their IDEs. He then asked them to not write any code and just use coding agents for all their work. Editors are where the developers habit live, ask any developer and they will tell you about their workflows and habit that were build around the IDE they used.

That is all changing, newer Models are much better at coding. Anthropic reports that among the longest Claude Code sessions, the time the agent works before stopping nearly doubled in three months, from under 25 minutes to over 45.
Even though price per token has been falling, the companies are using so many token that their total AI bill is going up.

Pretty soon, it won’t be unusual for companies to expect a $300,000 developer to burn through at least $10,000 in tokens a year, and not using AI tokens might count against you.

This is going to usher in a new paradigm at work place, let's call it "Claudeonomics" ( this is from Meta's internal board).

In a Claudeonomics workplace, tokens become a resource you manage, like headcount or cloud costs. Teams get token budgets, managers watch usage dashboards, and how well a developer spends tokens starts to matter as much as how much code they write. The developers who stand out won’t be the ones who use the most tokens but the ones who get the most done per token.
Senior staff performance and incentives will be tied to token usage and AI adoption.

Whether you adopt a new friend or teach your old one new tricks, one thing is clear it has become smarter, faster and never sleeps.
