Free Etsy SEO Tools: What Each One Actually Checks (and What It Misses)

Every seller has a checklist they run before hitting publish. Most of them also have a free tool in a tab somewhere that gives them a green tick and very little else.

This is about which checks are worth making, and what each kind of free tool is honestly good for.

The four things a pre-publish check should tell you

If your pre-publish check answers all four of these, it is doing its job. Anything more is decoration.

1. Is the title within the limit, and is the product noun in the first 40 characters?
Etsy caps titles at 140 characters and discards the rest silently. But the position matters more than the count - Etsy reads titles left to right, and so do buyers. A 95-character title whose noun sits at character 14 beats a 138-character title whose noun sits at character 60.

2. Are all 13 tag slots filled, and does every tag fit inside 20 characters?
The median listing fills four or five slots. Each tag is capped at 20 characters and anything longer is dropped with no error message, no partial credit. A tag like "handmade custom personalized jewelry gift" does not become a partial tag - it does not exist.

3. Is there a buyer phrase you have never mentioned?
This is the check most sellers skip and it is the one that finds money. If buyers search "birthstone pendant" and your listing only says "custom necklace", you are invisible to a search you could have won.

4. Does the description answer the question your DMs ask most?
Every repeat DM is a description section you have not written yet. "What size is it?", "Is it dishwasher safe?", "How long does shipping take?", "Can I change the name?"

What a free check is actually good for

Free tools earn their keep in one place: catching the mechanical failures before they cost you a week of traffic.

Not every listing needs a full SEO strategy. Most need a lint pass. If you have 40 listings and you publish 5 a week, the question is not "how do I out-optimise my competitors". The question is "is anything obviously broken".

A good free check answers that in under a minute.

A worked example

Here is a listing that looks fine and is quietly broken in four ways.

Title: Personalized Name Necklace for Women, Handmade Sterling Silver Nameplate Necklace, Custom Birthday Gift for Her
Tags: initial necklace, name necklace, sterling silver, custom jewelry, gift for her, birthday gift, minimal jewelry, layered necklace, nameplate pendant, personalized gift, silver pendant, handmade jewelry
Description: A beautiful handmade sterling silver nameplate necklace. Perfect custom gift. Made to order. 3-5 business days.

What the check catches:

Check Result Fix
Title length 115 characters, no truncation Keep it
Product noun position "necklace" first Keep it
Tag slots filled 12 of 13 Fill the 13th
Tags over 20 chars "silver pendant" is 14, "handmade jewelry" is 15 - all pass Keep them
Missing buyer phrase "birthstone" is absent from title, tags and description Add it
Description specs No chain length, no pendant size, no material detail Add three specs

Five checks, two real problems. The tag count and the missing phrase. Both were invisible without the check, and both are cheap to fix.

What each kind of free tool actually checks

Keyword suggesters. Fast, cheap, and a reasonable starting point if you have never done Etsy SEO at all. They solve the hardest part of a beginner problem: finding out what buyers call your product. Search Etsy yourself and read the autocomplete - that is the same idea done manually.

Where they stop: the list is generic. A keyword tool cannot tell you that your listing already says the word, or that one of its suggestions is 24 characters long and Etsy will silently drop it. Most of them describe a category rather than your specific product, so you are doing the filtering work either way.

Scorers. Fast feedback, and genuinely good at catching the obvious failures: a title that is too short, fewer than 13 tags, tags over the character limit. For a seller who has never run a technical check, a scorer turns a vague feeling into a concrete list of things to fix.

Where they stop: scores are computed against generic rules rather than against demand. A listing can score 95 and still be invisible, because nothing in the score came from a real buyer search. And a number without a specific list of missing phrases is decoration - it is the single most common way sellers waste an afternoon, improving a listing from 60 to 90 without ever finding out that the phrase buyers actually search was never in it.

AI rewrite tools. Fast, and they handle the mechanical work of filling 13 tag slots properly. This is where the real time saving is: writing thirteen non-duplicate tags that all describe one product is tedious, and tedium is exactly where people give up and settle for five.

Where they stop: a model with no keyword data invents plausible-sounding tags that nobody searches for. It also cannot check the 20-character limit, because it is not counting characters, it is writing prose.

On free versus paid

Here is the honest arithmetic.

Doing a listing by hand - research, write, count characters, check for repeats - takes roughly 20 to 40 minutes once you know what you are doing. The first ten listings take longer.

Listings rewritten each month Time at 25 min each EtsyRank Pro, monthly
5 about 2 hours USD 9
20 about 8 hours USD 9
50 about 21 hours USD 9
100 about 42 hours USD 9

The break-even point is low, because the free tier already lets you check the output quality on one listing. If that single rewrite does not save you twenty minutes, it is not worth a subscription either.

A 20-minute routine that actually holds

Here is the version that survives contact with a real shop week:

  • Monday, 10 minutes. Run one checker pass over your five most recent listings. Fix anything under 60 straight away. Do not re-run it on the same listing twice in a week - the score does not change unless you change the listing.
  • Mid-week, 5 minutes. When a DM asks a question you have answered before, add the answer to that listing's description. One question, one edit, five minutes.
  • Monthly, 30 minutes. Pick your ten worst listings by impressions. Run a demand check on all ten. Rewrite the two worst titles and refill their empty tag slots.

That is 45 minutes a month and it covers the four checks that actually matter. The sellers who beat everyone on Etsy are almost never the ones with the most sophisticated tooling - they are the ones who did the small thing every week without skipping it.

Where to check the official standards

  • site:help.etsy.com listing quality and search visibility
  • site:help.etsy.com listing title character limit
  • site:help.etsy.com listing quality score

The point of checking at all

Checking is not about hitting a number. It is about not leaving inventory on the table.

Etsy gives you 13 tag slots, a 140-character title and a description with no length limit. Every seller who fills 4 of 13 slots and stops is leaving searchable surface unused - and the difference between a listing that ranks and a listing that merely exists is usually a handful of phrases you never thought of.

Start with the free check. Run it on the ten listings you are least proud of. Fix what it finds. If it names a buyer phrase you have never mentioned, that is your next four weeks of traffic, and it cost you a paste.
