How to Calculate Real MPG Instead of Trusting the Dash Readout

A dashboard's fuel economy display is an estimate built from sensor data and rolling averages, not a direct measurement of what actually happened at the pump. It's usually close, but "usually close" and "accurate enough to plan a budget around" are different standards, and the gap between them is easy to calculate by hand in about two minutes.

Why the Dashboard Number Drifts From Reality

Modern cars estimate fuel economy using data from the fuel injection system and a mass air flow sensor, then apply a rolling average over some window of recent driving.
