Why Deck Board Spacing Changes How Much Lumber You Actually Buy

Two decks with the exact same square footage can need noticeably different amounts of decking board, and the difference usually isn't the framing underneath, it's the gap between boards and which direction they run. A deck built with 1/8 inch gaps between boards, laid parallel to the house, needs less lumber than one built with 3/16 inch gaps laid at a 45 degree angle across the same footprint. Neither number is wrong, they're just answering slightly different questions.

Why Board Gaps Aren't Optional

Composite and wood decking both need a consistent gap between boards for drainage and, for wood specifically, room to expand and contract with humidity. Manufacturers typically specify a gap range, often 1/8 to 3/16 inch for composite and slightly more for wood depending on species and moisture content at installation. That gap isn't wasted material, but it does mean the boards don't tile the deck surface edge to edge, so raw square footage divided by board width alone will overstate coverage per board.

What a Bad Layout Guess Actually Costs
