Note: kutools for Excel has more than 180 features which are used to complete the difficult task with several clicks. If you want to use Kutools, you need to install it from Excel’s official website.
Shade or Color Every Other Row:
- First, you need to highlight the range that you want to shade or color.
- Go to the Kutools Tab, select the Format option, choose the Alternate Row/Column Shading option from the menu.
- Then, it will open the Alternate Row / Column Shading Dialog box.
- After that, You need to choose the Rows option under the Apply shading to section.
Then, you need to choose the shading method options:
- Conditional formatting – This option uses conditional formatting to apply shading to alternate rows. If you insert any new rows within the range, the alternate row shading will be adjusted automatically.
- Standard Formatting – It uses standard formatting to apply shading to alternate rows.
- Remove existing alternate shading – This option will remove all conditional formatting and background shading.
- Shade color – You need to select the color using the drop-down arrow as you need.
- *Shade every – * Specify the number of rows that you want to shade.
- Leave existing color for non-shaded rows – If the selected range is filled with background color, and you don’t want to remove the background color after you apply this utility, you need to check this option.
- Finally, click the OK button.
- Now, you can see that the selected range has been shaded every other row as shown in the below image.
Steps to Shade Color Every Other Column:
- First, you need to select the range that you want to shade.

- Now, it will open the Alternate Row / Column Shading Dialog box.
- You need to choose the Columns option under the Applying shading to section.
- Conditional formatting – This option uses conditional formatting to apply shading to alternate rows. If you insert any new rows within the range, the alternate row shading will be adjusted automatically.
- Standard Formatting – It uses standard formatting to apply shading to alternate rows.
- Remove existing alternate shading – This option will remove all conditional formatting and background shading.
- Shade color – You need to select the color using the drop-down arrow as you need.

Remove All Conditional Formatting Shading & Background Color:
- Select the input range which contains conditional formatting or background color that you want to remove.
- On the Kutools Tab, select the Format option, choose the Alternate Row/Column Shading option from the menu.
- After that, it will open the Alternate Row / Column Shading Dialog box.
- In that dialog box, you need to select the Remove existing alternate row shading option.
- Then, click the OK button.
- It will open a prompt box, if you click Yes, the conditional formatting and background color will be deleted.
- If you click No, the background color will be deleted.
