OpenAI's Software Engineer interview is different from the classic big-tech loop in one obvious way: it leans toward real engineering work. You are less likely to get a string of abstract puzzle questions and more likely to face implementation tasks, production-focused design prompts, and conversations about reliability, safety, and user impact. If you are preparing for this process, practice like an engineer who ships systems, not like someone grinding trick problems.
The process is structured, but it still changes by team. In most cases, you can expect application review, an intro screen, one or more technical assessments, and a final loop. Finals usually take 4 to 6 hours total with 4 to 6 interviewers across 1 or 2 days. Most loops are virtual, with an onsite option in San Francisco for some candidates. Some teams move fast, some take longer, so do not read too much into a few quiet days.
Interview process overview
1. Resume review
This part is async and often takes around a week. Nobody is asking you questions yet, so your resume has to carry the load.
OpenAI is likely looking for technical impact, ownership, scope, and evidence that you can learn fast in a new area. If your work touches infrastructure, developer tools, product systems, distributed systems, or research-adjacent engineering, make that obvious. Vague bullets do not help. You want concrete outcomes, technical depth, and signs that you made important decisions yourself.

3. Technical screen or skills assessment
This round often lasts 60 minutes, though some teams split it into more than one step. The format may be pair coding, a live coding task, an online assessment, or a practical technical exercise.
The big theme is implementation. You may need to write code that handles edge cases, improves an existing function, adds tests, or reasons about performance and correctness under realistic constraints. Interviewers are usually watching for code quality, debugging habits, and whether you ask clarifying questions before building.
4. System design interview
For mid-level and senior roles, a dedicated system design round is common. It is usually around 60 minutes and often shows up again in the final loop.
This is not just "draw boxes and arrows." You should define the problem clearly, propose APIs, describe data models, reason about failure modes, and explain trade-offs. OpenAI cares about scale, latency, maintainability, cost, abuse prevention, observability, and whether the system actually fits the product need.

You might debug a broken implementation, refactor messy code, review a snippet, or build a component with constraints around retries, state, or concurrency. Clean structure matters. Readability matters. Interviewers want to know whether you can write code other engineers would want to maintain.
7. Behavioral and team conversations
There is usually at least one round focused on how you work. Some loops also include a hiring manager chat or team-fit conversation with engineers or cross-functional partners.
Expect questions about ownership, incidents, disagreements, prioritization, collaboration with researchers or product people, and moments where you chose safety or reliability over speed. For applied teams, product judgment can matter as much as backend depth.
What they actually test
The interview is broad, but the center of gravity is practical engineering judgment.
On the coding side, you should be comfortable with common data structures, object-oriented design, string and stateful logic, debugging, refactoring, and testing. Complexity still matters, but the "best" answer is often the one that is clear, correct, and maintainable. A fancy solution with poor readability is not a win.
On the systems side, you should expect questions around:
- API design
- data modeling
- caching
- authentication and authorization
- rate limiting and quota enforcement
- idempotency
- observability
- fault tolerance
- scaling under heavy traffic
- rollback planning
- abuse prevention
At OpenAI, design interviews may also move into model-serving and API-platform problems. That means streaming responses, variable-latency inference, batching, cost versus latency trade-offs, and resource constraints tied to GPUs or other expensive compute. Even if the role is not research-heavy, you may still need to think about systems that behave differently from a standard web app.

Mission fit also matters more than candidates sometimes expect. OpenAI is likely trying to understand whether you can make solid decisions in situations where safety, trust, and reliability have real product consequences. If you have examples where you slowed a launch to reduce risk, improved monitoring after an incident, or changed a design because it was unsafe or too fragile, those are useful stories.
How to prepare
- Write a real answer to "Why OpenAI?" Tie it to your past work and to responsible AI deployment, product reliability, infrastructure, or developer tooling.
- Practice coding in a plain editor. Focus on readable structure, test cases, edge conditions, and explaining trade-offs while you write.
- Get comfortable asking clarifying questions early. If a prompt is vague, define the scope before you start coding or designing.
- Prepare one project you know end to end. Rehearse architecture, trade-offs, metrics, incidents, and what you would redesign today.
- In system design practice, talk about latency, cost, quotas, failure modes, rollback paths, observability, and abuse controls. Do not stop at high-level components.
- Review concurrency, retries, timeouts, idempotency, and debugging. These topics fit the kind of engineering problems OpenAI seems to care about.
- Practice behavioral stories about ownership, incidents, hard trade-offs, and times you chose reliability or safety over speed.
