Agent Chains Are Hot — But Who Orchestrates the Multi-Agent Workflows?

Today's GitHub Trending tells a clear story: Agent chains for complex tasks have arrived.

morluto/rea picked up a massive amount of stars in a single day with a bold promise — "reverse engineer anything with agents, from app behavior down to native binaries." The approach? Chain multiple specialized Agents together to automate a deep, multi-step task that previously required hours of manual work.

Meanwhile, mksglu/context-mode is tackling the governance side — sandboxing tool output across 17 platforms, persisting session memory, and enforcing routing. And vercel-labs/skills is standardizing how Agent skills are distributed and invoked.

But here's the gap nobody's addressing yet: Agent chains work when the task is linear. Real enterprise tasks aren't.

The Linear Chain Illusion

Consider what morluto/rea does well: disassemble → debug → analyze. It's a chain — each step feeds the next. That's powerful, and it works.

But now consider a real enterprise scenario:

  • An Agent analyzes a customer support ticket → routes it
  • Based on the ticket type, different Agents need to handle it (billing? technical? escalation?)
  • One Agent might need to call an OCR skill to read an attached screenshot
  • Another might need to call a translation skill for a non-English ticket
  • If the billing Agent can't resolve it, it needs to escalate — not fail the whole workflow
  • Every step needs to be logged for audit

This isn't a chain. It's a DAG with conditionals, branches, and failure recovery. And that's what workflow orchestration is for.

Astron Agent Workflow Orchestration

Enter iflytek/astron-agent

iflytek/astron-agent is an enterprise-grade, commercial-friendly agentic workflow platform designed for exactly this:

  • Task decomposition: Break complex goals into sub-tasks assigned to specialized Agents
  • Multi-agent coordination: Define execution order, dependencies, and conditional branching
  • Checkpoint & resume: When step 7 of 12 fails, resume from the checkpoint — don't start over
  • Commercial-grade stability: Built for enterprise environments where reliability isn't optional

Plug in Real Multimodal Skills

Orchestration needs skills to orchestrate. iflytek/iFly-Skills provides iFLYTEK's official skill collection — voice, OCR, translation, proofreading, and multimodal capabilities — that can be invoked directly within astron-agent workflows.

This mirrors what vercel-labs/skills is doing with open Agent skill distribution — but iFly-Skills focuses on production-ready multimodal capabilities from iFLYTEK's years of AI engineering.

The Maturity Curve

The pattern across today's Trending is clear:

  1. Agent chains (rea) — prove that multi-step Agent execution works
  2. Context governance (context-mode) — prove that routing and session management are needed
  3. Skill distribution (vercel-labs/skills) — prove that tool discovery needs standardization
  4. Multi-agent orchestration (astron-agent) — the layer that ties it all together

Agent chains are the proof of concept. Multi-agent workflow orchestration is the production system.
