Posted by the FileFreight team. We build a flat-rate delivery tool for digital sellers: secure download links and license keys. Pricing figures below are from GrooveSell's own product page (groove.cm, checked October 2026) and ours.
If you sell digital products through GrooveSell, the pitch is simple: it's free, and Groove takes 5% only when you sell. That's genuinely great when you're starting out — sell nothing, pay nothing.
But 5% of every sale adds up faster than most sellers expect. There's a specific dollar amount where a flat $19/month fee becomes cheaper, and it's lower than you'd guess: about $380/month in sales.
GrooveSell's actual fee (from groove.cm/products/groovesell)
- $0/month, unlimited products and funnels
- 5% platform fee on the gross amount of completed sales (reversed on refunds)
- Stripe/PayPal processing (~2.9% + $0.30) applies on top — GrooveSell's own FAQ says so
One important context note: Groove has closed new enrollment and moved toward Scale.gg — GrooveSell is currently available to existing members. This article is for those existing sellers doing the math on what they're already paying.
The breakeven vs a $19/month flat fee
A $19/month flat fee with 0% per-sale platform fees (that's our FileFreight Pro plan) beats a 5% per-sale fee the moment your 5% exceeds $19:
$19 ÷ 0.05 = $380/month in sales.
- At $500/month in sales, the 5% fee takes $25. Flat $19 saves you $6/month.
- At $1,000/month, the 5% fee takes $50 — flat saves $31/month.
- At $5,000/month, the 5% fee takes $250 — flat saves $231/month.
The gap widens every month you grow, and it never closes, because a percentage fee scales with your revenue while a flat fee doesn't.
The honest caveats (read these)
Fees are not the whole story, and we'd be lying if we said they were:
- FileFreight is not a Merchant of Record. We do not handle sales tax or VAT for you — payments go straight to your own Stripe account, so tax responsibility stays with you. If tax handling is the reason you picked your current platform, that alone can be worth a percentage fee.
- GrooveSell is a full funnel/cart system — checkout pages, order bumps, one-click upsells, downsells, split tests, affiliate tracking. FileFreight is delivery-only: secure expiring download links, license keys with revocation, and refund auto-revoke. If you live in Groove's funnel builder, that workflow isn't something we replace; you'd pair a checkout you control with delivery that doesn't take a cut.
- No automatic importer. We can't one-click migrate your GrooveSell products (yet). We do offer free manual migration help — we rebuild your products, files, and license keys by hand.
- We're not a Shopify app, and Stripe processing fees apply on our plans too — the 0% is our platform cut, not the card network's.
Who should actually switch
- Already selling over ~$380/month on GrooveSell? You're paying more in percentage fees than a flat $19 would cost. The math is unambiguous.
- Selling under $380/month and happy with Groove's funnels, upsells, and affiliate tracking? Honestly, stay. At that volume the 5% is cheap, and switching costs are real.
- Growing fast? Run the number for where you'll be in six months, not where you are today — percentage fees punish growth.
If the math works for you: FileFreight — Free plan is $0 + 5% per sale (same headline structure as GrooveSell), Pro is $19/month flat with 0% per-sale platform fees. And if you're migrating, we'll move your products for free, by hand.
