Why automate processes?

⚙️ Automation Process

Hello again! 👋

In my previous post, I wrote about automating project setup. Today, I’d like to take a broader look at automation—and how combining AI with scripts can help reduce repetitive work.

Why automate?

Automation isn’t just for programming. If you find yourself repeating the same steps regularly, there may be an opportunity to automate them.

The goal is simple: spend less time on routine tasks, reduce manual effort, and make more room for the work—and the parts of life—that matter most. ⏳

Automation in software development

Developers already use many tools to automate common workflows:

  • Makefiles to run complex or frequently used commands
  • Docker and Docker Compose to create consistent environments and simplify local development or deployment
  • GitHub Actions to automate testing and CI/CD workflows
  • Python scripts to manipulate files, run commands, configure environments, and connect steps in a workflow

I’ve used Python scripts to automate tasks on my machine and handle different parts of my development setup. Even a small script can save time when it replaces a task you repeat often.

Where AI fits in 🤖

AI makes automation more accessible. Instead of writing every script or tool from scratch, you can use AI to help create a first version tailored to a specific task.

For example, AI can help you:

  • Draft a script to organize files
  • Build a command-line utility for a repetitive task
  • Create a project setup workflow
  • Explain or improve an existing automation
  • Turn a list of manual steps into a repeatable process

AI and scripts simplifying repetitive developer workflows

The useful shift is moving from asking AI to perform every task directly to asking it to help you build a tool that performs the task reliably.

Start small, then improve

Your first attempt may need adjustments. That’s normal. Start with one repetitive task, ask AI to help create a simple solution, and test it with a few examples. Then refine it as you learn what works.

A small, useful tool can be a great first step—and it may save you time every time you use it.

Keep security in mind 🔐

AI-generated tools still need review. Before using them with important files or systems:

  • Check what the code does before running it.
  • Test it on sample data or in a safe environment.
  • Avoid putting passwords, API keys, or other secrets into prompts or scripts.
  • Review how the tool handles files, permissions, and environment variables.

AI can help you build faster, but you’re still responsible for checking that the result is safe and suitable for your needs.

Final thought ✨

Automation doesn’t have to start with a big project. Choose one task you repeat, explore whether a script or small tool could help, and improve it over time.

A little setup today can mean less repetitive work tomorrow—and more time for what matters to you.
