Just start and do not look back

Hi everyone! How’s it going? I hope you’re all doing well 🙂

I want to talk about something non-technical, but still important—especially for developers: just start.

Starting a new routine or task can be hard. Sometimes we want to plan every step and get everything right before we begin. But waiting until we feel completely ready can keep us stuck.

Here are a few things people often try:

  • Make a list of what needs to be done.
  • Start with a simple plan, then add complexity as you go.
  • Set a deadline and try not to stress too much about it.
  • And so on...

Those ideas can help, but sometimes the hardest part is simply getting started. Everyone has different circumstances, and even with a plan, it can take time to put it into practice.

Here are a few ideas that might help if you feel stuck in that loop.

1. Focus on showing up, not the deadline

If you already know the steps, try not to let the deadline become the only thing you focus on. Start with something simple: Did you work on it today? What did you practice? What did you learn?

Give yourself time to build confidence. You don’t have to force your way through everything in one go. A fresh start tomorrow can be just as useful as pushing yourself past your limit today.

2. Treat mistakes as part of learning

If you don’t know something yet, don’t pressure yourself to do it perfectly. Mistakes can show you what to try differently next time.

And if you forget something, that’s okay. Look at how many times you’ve practiced and what you’ve learned along the way. You could even set a very ambitious goal and see how far you get. Reaching part of it may already be a meaningful step—and if you reach the whole thing, that’s a bonus 😉

Progress isn’t only about completing the objective. It’s also about noticing what worked, what didn’t, and what you learned from each attempt.

3. Make room for the rest of your life

Keep doing other things too: exercise, spend time with people, and stay open to interests beyond your main goal. Those things don’t have to be barriers. Sometimes they’re part of what helps you keep going.

Life isn’t only about reaching one objective. Once you reach it, another goal may appear—and you’ll be a different person by then.

That’s my mindset, anyway. I’m sure there are more ideas people can add, but I like keeping it simple rather than making a list of a hundred rules.

When you’re unsure which step to take, think about the possible benefits and downsides. You don’t have to make a reckless choice, but remember that staying still is a choice too. Pick a direction, take a manageable first step, and learn as you go. You can adjust your path along the way.

This isn’t really an AI topic, but I thought it might help other developers too haha.

Thanks for reading. Have a good day! 🙌
