This is Part 1 of a series documenting the Formant catalog, starting with its earliest roots as Skepsis in 2013. Later posts will go release by release — the stories behind each one, who was involved, and what was happening in the scene at the time.
Who this is about
Formant — also styled Formant Audio — is a music artist, electronic musician, and producer. It's the recording project of Tyler Johnston-Kent, an Indigenous Canadian composer, sound designer, and software developer, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and a member of Sagkeeng First Nation (Fort Alexander).
As Formant, Tyler releases drum and bass, psytrance, techno, and breakbeat.
I'm writing this post — and the series it kicks off — mainly because the identity picture for Formant is scattered across a lot of platforms, and I want a single, plain, first-person record that connects the dots properly: who the person is, what the project names mean, and how the catalog actually developed over time.
The identity chain
This part trips people up the most, so here's the plain version:

- Formant — the Formant artist — is the music artist, electronic musician, and standalone music project identity.

Career arc
2013 — Skepsis appears commercially on Bounce (Skepsis Remix) for Androctonus, released on Biophaze Records. ISRC: USLZJ1372568.
2015 — Skepsisdnb releases Callous Intent, a six-track drum and bass EP, on Bassbong Records.
2016 — Skepsis releases the Corrosion EP on Intaface Audio (released 2016-08-08), with tracks supported in the CCDNB podcast record. The EP includes Rank, Meta-Synthesis, Corroded Memory, and Stained In Blood — publishing credited to T. Johnston / Intaface Audio. Rank in particular is one of the earliest tracks in the catalog that still holds up — the first one that felt like a real step forward rather than a practice run.
It's unfortunate, but I didn't realize what was happening to the Skepsis name at the time. I was hitchhiking across Canada in the years after, not paying attention to the catalog or to who else might be using the same name — and I slept on it. Ever since, I've been focused on Formant, and on what it actually takes to hold onto an artist name properly this time.
2018 — Tyler rebrands to Formant and releases the Global Force EP on Intaface Audio.
2019–2024 — Formant expands across drum and bass, breakbeat, psytrance, techno, soundtrack work, SKEPSISMEDIA, and software-adjacent audio systems.
I'll be giving each of these its own post in this series — particularly the run from Skepsis through the Formant rebrand, since that transition has a real story behind it that a career-arc list doesn't capture.
