Method of justifying decisions in design - Jeffrey Bulger

The article analyzes the problem of 'aesthetic moralism' in contemporary design, where the language of care and inclusivity often replaces rigorous ethical argumentation. Drawing on Jeffrey Bulger's concept, the author indicates that good intentions are not enough to justify design decisions, as every intervention in space or technology involves power asymmetry and potential costs for the user. Using the example of a smart square, it is shown how responsive systems can simultaneously improve comfort and violate privacy. The solution is to move from an ethical mood to a formalized infrastructure of responsibility—a procedural method of justification that allows for the audit, verification, and public accountability of design decisions, instead of relying on the creator's subjective sense of moral correctness.
