GeoD Global: an open-source Windows workbench for geospatial data discovery and downloads

Hi DEV community — I maintain GeoD Global, an open-source Windows application for discovering, previewing and downloading geospatial data. I would appreciate feedback on how its local-file workflow can fit alongside existing GIS tools.

The workflow is: select a product, area and time; search; select multiple results; preview coverage; review the download plan; then manage completed files in a local workspace.

Data types and channels

Supported examples include Sentinel-2, Landsat, NAIP, MODIS, VIIRS, HLS and CBERS imagery; Sentinel-1 RTC; Copernicus DEM, SRTM and other elevation products; land cover, forest change, vegetation, climate, hydrology, ocean, population, night lights and selected vector datasets.

Connected channels include Earth Search, Microsoft Planetary Computer, NASA Earthdata/GIBS, JAXA, INPE/Brazil Data Cube, OpenTopography and selected GSCloud products. Coverage, available dates and authentication requirements vary by product. Protected sources use the user's provider account.

The catalogue groups entries into 17 categories, with 110 marked available, 2 requiring authorization and 21 planned. Entries include products, service connection methods and local formats, rather than a claim of supporting all datasets from every provider.

Interoperability and local results

Users can connect STAC, WMS, WMTS, XYZ, WCS, WFS, OGC API Features and ArcGIS services, or open local GeoTIFF, GeoJSON, GeoPackage, Shapefile, PMTiles and MBTiles files. Search initially loads the latest 100 results, with more on demand; NAIP prioritizes the latest acquisition year.

Downloaded files are managed locally. The workspace supports layers, raster inspection, and clipping/mosaicking for supported compatible rasters. An optional assistant can use a user-configured model to prepare searches and download plans, with confirmation before execution. A GeoD Global account is not required for local use.

Release and feedback

Version 0.2.0 targets Windows 10/11 x64 and requires WebView2. The installers are unsigned. Anonymous usage statistics are enabled by default and can be disabled in settings. License: GPL-3.0-only. This introduction was prepared with AI assistance.

I would especially welcome feedback on metadata/provenance, provider access, and export conventions that make the resulting local files easier to use in QGIS, GRASS or other geospatial workflows.
