I think the main reason stand ups are getting less and less popular is that more and more teams are globally distributed and time when whole team can not is so limited so you would rather spend it on small group focused discussions discussing real problems.
Though it takes time for many team members to learn when it is necessary to initiate those calls.
I’ve seen that ... when part of the team is in another time zone. The only thing I’ve seen work reasonably well here was having a local “representative” ... someone that can pass information each direction.
I would say if it’s just offsite devs, you should still be able to get together somehow.
