The existence matrix maps how you engage the world: three modes (do, think, connect) times three objects (entities, relations, potential) — nine cells. The six forces map what drives you. Cross them and the matrix stops being a seating chart — force flows at a different rate in every cell, and your life is the routing record of forces across the nine.
A pattern first: forces converge naturally on the "do × entity" cell — most concrete, fastest to monetize, easiest to measure. So everyone crowds the top-left; finance engraves valuations there, technology piles tools there. Meanwhile "think × potential" and "connect × potential" run thin — the deserts of the matrix — yet the next generation's rules are brewing precisely in those deserts.
Do × Entity: The Highway of Forces
Doing entity-work — writing code, building products, executing tasks — all six forces flow through: technology hands you tools, finance prices you, land stages you. The cost is congestion: everyone is here, and the arms race of efficiency has no finish line. Right for the accumulation years: force density is high, learning is fast.
Self-check: Does your output in this cell have traits others can easily copy? Yes — you are eating the dividend of force flow, not holding a position of your own.
Do × Relations: The Organizer's Cell
Doing relation-work — forming teams, running events, brokering collaborations — government and religious forces are most active here: rules, trust, and ritual are the glue of relation. The output is a network: a connection left behind by one act of organizing outlives one unit of entity output.
Self-check: Of the last connection you brokered, do the two sides still deal with each other? Yes — you hold an asset in this cell; no — you only rented the venue.
Do × Potential: The Sower's Cell
Doing potential-work — open-sourcing the unmapped, building platforms, writing the essay nobody commissioned — AGI force is the great variable here: it presses the marginal cost of doing to zero, making sowing cheap for the first time. Short-term this cell has no force flow; long-term it is the source: every entity-cell that later exploded was once a seed here.
Self-check: Do you have a project you've kept at for three-plus years with no return yet? Yes — this cell is sown; no — all your labor is harvesting other people's seeds.
Think × Entity: The Engineer's Cell
Thinking about entity problems — how to implement, how to optimize — technology is home turf; answers are verifiable, reproducible. Depth in this cell is counted in a hundred thousand hours, the sturdiest moat there is.
Self-check: Can you take one concrete technical question from principle to trade-off to boundary? Yes — real depth; no — you are consuming others' thinking.
Think × Relations: The Strategist's Cell
Thinking about relation problems — games, incentives, org design — the crossroads of finance and government forces: interest on one side, rules on the other. The output is judgment, the hardest thing for AI to replace, because it depends on understanding people — and people are the dirtiest data there is.
Self-check: Have you ever predicted the trajectory of a person or an organization — and been right? Yes — this cell is open; never tried — you treat people as constants, and people are variables.
Think × Potential: The Philosopher's Cell
Thinking about potential — what is possible, what is being ignored — all six forces exit here: no tool to verify, no market to price, no community to lean on. The loneliest cell of the matrix, and the birthplace of "untranslatable words." Religious force appears here in its negative form: the zones it forbids are exactly this cell's entrances.
Self-check: Do you have a question you've turned over for years — discussed by no one, changing nothing in your life — and still haven't dropped? Yes — you live in this cell; no — all your thinking is driven by other people's agendas.
Connect × Entity: The Trader's Cell
Connecting entities — brokering resources, matching supply and demand — finance is the blood: every connection has a price. Efficiency rules this cell, and AI hits it hardest: matching algorithms are eating the middleman.
Self-check: If your connections became an API tomorrow, would anyone still need you? No — this cell is depreciating.
Connect × Relations: The Gardener's Cell
Connecting relations — tending circles, passing trust, keeping company over years — land force is the soil: community, language, geography shape the form trust takes. This cell cannot scale, and so cannot be taken away. Behind every healthy organization are a few people who live here.
Self-check: Do people come to you because "you know them" and stay because "you understand them"? Yes — you are this cell's gardener; no — your connections are a contact list, not relations.
Connect × Potential: The Lighthouse's Cell
Connecting potential — wiring the not-yet-formed into the network — the positive battlefield of AGI force: the weak signals AI cannot see are caught only by people deep in the field. This cell has no pay system, no measure, no leaderboard — the emptiest cell of the matrix, and the only place where "making new things happen" actually happens.
Self-check: In the past year, have you introduced something nobody believed in to exactly the right person? Yes — the lighthouse has shone; no — everything you connect is already lit.
The Routing Is the Life
Lay the nine cells out and chart your force flows for the past year: which cell the money came from, which cell the time went to, which is warming and which is going fallow. A healthy routing is a cycle — doing entities supplies blood, thinking relations supplies judgment, connecting potential supplies the future. A sick routing is single-cell — the whole life staked on one cell; withdraw the force and the cell empties. The matrix doesn't judge where you live — it only reminds you: all nine cells exist.
