How to Identify Fake Forex Brokers Before You Deposit
One bad broker choice can wipe out months of trading profits. Here's how to spot the red flags before sending a single dollar.
Check Regulation First — Not Last
Legitimate brokers display their regulatory license number prominently. If you have to dig through three pages of fine print to find it, that's suspicious.
What to look for:
- FCA (UK) — Register number on FCA website
- ASIC (Australia) — AFSL license number
- CySEC (Cyprus) — CIF license number
- DFSA (Dubai) — Category 3 license
- MAS (Singapore) — CMS license
Always verify the license on the regulator's official website. Scammers invent fake license numbers all the time.
The Withdrawal Test
The real test of a broker is not how fast you can deposit — it's how fast you can withdraw.
Warning signs:
- Withdrawal takes more than 5 business days
- They ask for additional documents after you request withdrawal
- Minimum withdrawal is unreasonably high ($100+)
- They charge a withdrawal fee as a percentage (not fixed)
- They try to convince you to "cancel withdrawal and keep trading"
A regulated broker processes withdrawals within 1-3 business days. Anything beyond that requires an explanation.
Spread Manipulation
Some brokers widen spreads dramatically during news events — far beyond what the market justifies. Check your broker's spread during:
- NFP release
- FOMC announcements
- Major central bank rate decisions
If spreads jump to 5-10x normal during these events, you're being ripped off. Legitimate brokers widen spreads moderately (1.5-2x normal), not 10x.
The Execution Quality Trap
Re-quotes and slippage that always goes against you are not bad luck — they're a feature of a dealing desk broker that's trading against you.
Test your broker:
- Place a market order during low volatility
- Check fill speed and slippage
- Do this 20+ times and track the data
If slippage is consistently negative and you get re-quotes on >10% of trades, consider switching brokers immediately.
What Instruments Are Available?
Before committing real capital, check the full list of tradable instruments. Top-tier brokers offer:
- 40+ currency pairs (majors, minors, exotics)
- Gold, silver, oil, natural gas
- Major indices (S&P 500, FTSE 100, DAX, Nikkei)
- Cryptocurrencies (at least BTC, ETH)
- Global equities and ETFs
If a broker only offers majors and a handful of CFDs, your trading flexibility is limited. Diversification matters.
The Bottom Line
Due diligence on your broker is not optional. Verify regulation, test withdrawals, and check execution quality. Take 30 minutes to research your broker — it could save you thousands.
