Position Sizing: The One Skill That Separates Pros from Amateurs

Most traders spend years perfecting their entry signals — which candle pattern, which indicator cross, which support level. But here's the uncomfortable truth: the entry is only half the battle. The other half, arguably the more important one, is how much you put on.

Position sizing isn't glamorous. Nobody posts their risk calculations on Twitter. But it's the single most underrated skill in trading. Here's why:

The 2% Rule Isn't Enough
The classic "never risk more than 2%" is a starting point, not a strategy. If you risk 2% per trade and hit a 5-trade losing streak (which happens to everyone), you're down 10%. With a 50% win rate and 1:2 risk-reward, it takes 5 wins just to break even.

Better approach: adjust size based on recent performance. Hot streak? Stay at baseline. Cold streak? Cut size in half until you're back in rhythm.

The Kelly Criterion Simplified
While full Kelly math is complex, a simplified version works: if your win rate is W and your average win-to-loss ratio is R, the optimal fraction is (W × R - W) / R. Halve whatever number you get for a conservative approach.

Most traders end up at 0.5-1.5% per trade when following this method — tighter than the common 2% rule.

Why Failing to Size Correctly Kills Accounts
The math is brutal: a 50% drawdown requires a 100% gain to recover. A 30% drawdown needs 42.8%. Even 20% requires 25% to get back to even.

Our free Position Size Calculator lets you input account size, risk percentage, stop loss in pips, and instantly get exact lot size. No guessing, no mental math.
