Building a Global Open Source Business Without Getting Blocked by PayPal

The Problem We Were Actually Solving

We needed a platform to sell our templates and services globally without any restrictions. Our goal was to offer users a seamless purchasing experience, regardless of their geographical location. With the increasing popularity of our project, it was crucial to find a solution that would allow us to scale our business.

What We Tried First (And Why It Failed)

Initially, we tried using Gumroad, which seemed like the perfect solution at first. It integrated well with our project website, and we thought it would make selling our templates a breeze. However, when users from certain countries encountered issues with PayPal, Gumroad couldn't help us resolve the problem. Despite our best efforts, we couldn't get Gumroad to support us in circumventing PayPal's restrictions.

The Architecture Decision

After weeks of research and experimentation, we decided to switch to Payproglobal, a platform designed specifically for selling digital products globally. Unlike Gumroad, Payproglobal doesn't rely on PayPal for transactions, which eliminated the problem of regional restrictions. We were thrilled to find that users from restricted countries could now purchase our templates seamlessly. To integrate Payproglobal with our project website, we used their API, which allowed us to customize the checkout process to fit our needs.

What The Numbers Said After

After switching to Payproglobal, our sales increased by 30% within the first month. More importantly, we saw a significant reduction in support requests related to transaction issues. Our users were happy, and we were able to focus on developing new features for our project. The numbers clearly showed that our decision to switch to Payproglobal was the right one.

What I Would Do Differently

In retrospect, I would have explored alternative payment gateways earlier in the process. While Gumroad seemed like a convenient solution at first, it ultimately proved to be a hindrance. I would also have paid closer attention to the fine print when signing up with Payproglobal, as certain fees and charges applied to our transactions. Nevertheless, our experience with Payproglobal has been overwhelmingly positive, and we're confident that our decision to switch will continue to benefit our users and our project's growth.
