You cleared the coding round, and now there is one more call: the HR round. Many developers treat it as a formality and walk in with no plan. That is a mistake. A strong HR round can decide between two candidates with similar technical scores.
Here is a simple way to prepare.
What the HR round actually checks
What they check What it means for you
Communication Can you explain your work in plain words?
Teamwork Can you work with testers, designers and managers?
Attitude Do you handle feedback and pressure well?
Fit Do your goals match the role and the company?
Notice what is missing: they will not ask you to reverse a linked list. They want to know what it is like to work with you.
Step 1: Turn your projects into stories
“I built a REST API” is a fact. A story is better. Use the STAR method:
Situation: What was the problem?
Task: What was your part?
Action: What did you do, and why?
Result: What changed because of it?
Prepare two or three stories: a project you are proud of, a bug that taught you something, and a time you worked with a difficult teammate.
Step 2: Prepare for the common questions
Tell me about yourself. Keep it to 60 seconds: your studies, your main skills, and what you want next.
Why do you want to leave your current job? Talk about growth, not complaints about your old team.
What is your biggest weakness? Pick a real one and say what you are doing about it. “I used to avoid asking for help, so now I set a 30-minute limit before I ask” works better than “I work too hard.”
Where do you see yourself in three years? Link your answer to learning and responsibility.
Step 3: Learn to talk about code without jargon
The HR person is usually not a developer. If you cannot explain your project to them, they cannot rate you well. Practice this: explain your last project to a friend who does not code. If they understand the problem you solved, you are ready.
Step 4: Ask the interviewer something
Candidates who ask no questions look uninterested. Prepare two or three:
What does the onboarding look like for a new developer?
How does the team handle code reviews?
What would success look like in the first six months?
Step 5: Do a mock round
Reading answers is not the same as saying them. Record yourself on your phone and watch it once. Look for filler words and long pauses. Do this two or three times and you will feel the difference.
Quick checklist for the day
Keep a copy of your resume and ID ready
Test your internet and camera if the call is online
Join five minutes early
Keep a notebook open for the questions you prepared
Send a short thank-you message after the call

Technical skill gets you the interview. Communication helps you get the offer. Spend a few hours on the HR round, and it can pay off for years.
