How to Spot Fake Skincare Online: A Buyer's Checklist

Meta description: Worried about fake skincare? Use this simple checklist to check the seller, packaging, batch details and price before you buy.
Counterfeit and mishandled beauty products are a known problem across online shopping. You do not need to be an expert to protect yourself. You just need a short checklist and the habit of using it. Here is one you can follow every time.
Step 1: Check who is actually selling
On any marketplace, look past the product title and find the seller name. Is it the brand's own storefront? Is it a named authorised retailer? Or is it a small seller with few ratings and a vague name? When in doubt, go to the brand's own website and see where it says to buy.
Step 2: Read the price with suspicion
Discounts happen, especially during festive sales. But a price far below what the brand, the official store and big retailers charge is a warning sign. Genuine products cost money to make, ship and store properly.
Step 3: Look at the listing
• Are the photos the brand's own images, or blurry and mismatched?
• Does the listing show the brand name, size, ingredients and usage clearly?
• Is the description full of spelling mistakes?
• Do the reviews talk about this specific product, or are they generic?
Step 4: Check the return policy before paying
A clear return or replacement policy is a good sign. If a seller will not take returns on skincare, ask yourself why.
Step 5: Inspect the package when it arrives
Open the delivery with care and check:
• The outer box and seal are intact, with no signs of tampering.
• The printing is clean and consistent, with no smudged text or odd fonts.
• A batch number and manufacture or expiry date are present and readable.
• The product smells, looks and feels as you would expect from earlier experience with the brand.
• The label includes the importer or distributor details for imported products.
Step 6: Patch test before using
Even genuine products can irritate some skin. Test a small amount on your inner forearm or behind the ear first, particularly with anything new.
Step 7: Keep your proof
Save the order confirmation, invoice and photos of the packaging until you have used the product up. If you ever need a refund or want to report a problem, these make it easier.
What to do if you suspect a fake
Stop using it. Take photos of the product, label and packaging. Contact the seller and the platform, and also write to the brand through its official channels. Brands often want to know about suspect listings.
How to read the dates and symbols on the pack
Genuine packaging usually carries several pieces of information worth checking:
• Batch number: a code that identifies the production run. It should be printed or embossed clearly and match across the box and the container.
• Manufacture or expiry date: shows how fresh the stock is. Avoid anything close to expiry.
• Period after opening: a small open-jar symbol with a number such as 12M, meaning how many months the product is meant to be used after opening.
• Ingredient list: should be complete and readable, in small but clear print.
• Importer or distributor details: usually listed on imported products sold in India, so look for them.
If any of these are missing, hard to read or inconsistent between the box and the bottle, raise it with the seller.
Storage matters as much as the seal
Even genuine skincare can be affected by heat and sunlight. Products left in hot warehouses or vehicles for long periods may change in smell, colour or texture. If a serum looks cloudy, separated or smells noticeably off when it is new, do not use it and contact the seller.
Be wary of look-alike names
Some listings use names that sound close to a known brand or product line, or mention a brand only in the keywords. Always match the exact product name, size and packaging against the brand's own website before you order.
Make checking a habit
None of this takes long, and most of it becomes second nature after the first few orders. The simplest shortcut of all is to buy from the brand's official store or an authorised seller it names.
For Ginger6, Glow & Beam is the official store in India, which removes a lot of the guesswork.
