DraftKey is a Mac app that puts on-device AI autocomplete and rewrite into almost any text field: type, see grey ghost text, press Tab to accept it, or select a sentence and press ⌘⌥ to rewrite it in place. It costs $4.99 once, a lifetime license for up to 3 Macs, and runs fully offline on Apple Silicon (macOS 14+, ~1.12 GB local model). Get it at getdraftkey.com.
Disclosure: I built DraftKey (Aura Technologies). There's no free trial, so I'll be specific about where it helps and where it doesn't.
Why a developer would want this
Code editors already have Copilot-style completion. The writing around code doesn't: Slack replies, standup notes, emails to stakeholders, PR descriptions in the browser, issue comments. That's the gap DraftKey fills. It works through the macOS Accessibility API, so there's no plugin per app.
A normal day with it
- Morning Slack catch-up. You start "Looked into the flaky test, it turns out" and DraftKey offers the rest of the sentence. Tab if it's right, keep typing if not.
- PR description in the browser. Draft the summary roughly, select it, ⌘⌥, and you get a tighter version in the same text box.
- Email to a non-engineer. Select the jargon-heavy paragraph and rewrite it into something a PM can read.
- End-of-day notes. Short completions in Notes or Mail while the context is still in your head.
What it won't do
- Not a frontier model. The local model is good at finishing sentences and tightening prose. It won't design your system or write a long doc from one line.
- Not in your code editor. Keep Copilot or Cursor for code. DraftKey is for prose.
- Some fields don't cooperate. Terminals, secure/password fields, custom canvases and some Electron apps expose text poorly through Accessibility, so suggestions may not appear there.
- Apple Silicon + macOS 14 only. No Intel Macs.
Why on-device matters for dev work
Slack threads and PR descriptions often mention internal systems, customers or incidents. DraftKey's model runs locally, so what you type isn't sent to a cloud API for suggestions.
Price, plainly
$4.99 once. No subscription, no account, up to 3 Macs. If you write a lot of non-code text on an Apple Silicon Mac, get DraftKey at getdraftkey.com.
