Why I Built TokenBar After One Ugly AI Bill

#ai

A couple months ago I opened my laptop and realized I had no idea what my AI usage was costing me.

Not the vague kind of idea. I mean actual blind spots. I was shipping with Claude and ChatGPT open all day, and the bill only showed up after the fact. That is a bad way to find out you burned money.

That was the whole reason I built TokenBar.

TokenBar is a tiny macOS menu bar app that shows token usage and cost in real time while you work. No dashboard hunting. No waiting for an invoice. Just a simple live number sitting where you can actually see it.

The product is small on purpose.

I did not want to build another bloated AI tool with tiers, credits, and some giant story about enterprise value. I wanted something that solves one sharp problem: surprise spend.

Once I started using it myself, the lesson got clearer fast.

When the cost is visible, you work differently. You notice when a prompt loop is spinning. You notice when a task does not need the expensive model. You stop treating AI like free magic.

That is the whole point.

TokenBar is for people who use AI every day and want to keep their spend honest.

If that is you, you can check it out here: https://tokenbar.site
