The landscape of AI coding tools has changed dramatically in just one year.

According to Similarweb, the traffic share of AI code completion tools has shifted significantly over the past 12 months.

Back in March 2025, the situation seemed fairly clear: Cursor held a solid 30% share, reigning as the leader. Replit and bolt.new each had their piece of the pie, while lovable.dev was in second place with about 28%.

But then, things took a turn.

Cursor, which peaked at nearly 38%, saw its share plummet to under 20% by February 2026. In just one year, it was cut in half.

So, who’s taking away its market share?

The biggest surprise has been base44.com—a name you might not even recognize. Before August 2025, it was almost invisible, but starting in September, it surged and by February 2026, it was nearing a 20% share. From zero to a neck-and-neck position with Cursor in just six months.

Meanwhile, lovable.dev has remained steady, consistently holding between 25-35%, with a recent upward trend.

On the other hand, bolt.new has been shrinking since mid-year, dropping from around 15% to below 10%. Replit is experiencing a similar fate, gradually losing its share.

This data reveals a harsh reality: there are no moats in the AI tools arena.

Today, you might be the market leader, but tomorrow a new player with a better experience or lower price could snatch away your users. The loyalty of users to AI tools is nearly nonexistent—people will use whatever works best, and switching costs are incredibly low.

Honestly, it’s reminiscent of the old browser wars. Every few months, a new disruptor emerges, and last month’s champion could easily fall behind the next month.

For everyday users, this is a good thing. The fiercer the competition, the cheaper and better the tools become.

But for entrepreneurs, this chart serves as a warning: in the AI era, if you’re in the tools space, you need to move faster than everyone else. Your moat isn’t technology or branding; it’s about whether you can consistently stay half a step ahead.

Fall behind, and you’ll lose your share.
