Master the Art of Packing for Your Next Gravel Race

Preparing for a gravel event or race requires significant time, effort, and dedication. As the race approaches, packing is one of the most crucial aspects of preparation.

The other two are: eating and resting, but these are for another post.

Properly packing for the event can make a difference on race day; a bit of practice can go a long way.

Here is a list of things you should pack for your next gravel race:

Bike

  • Maintenance : Ensure your bike is in good working order and you have all the necessary tools and spares.
  • Tires : Check the road type and decide on the tires you wish to have. This is a significant decision. For terrain at the smoother end of the gravel, narrower tires (around 40mm) would be my choice. My testing suggests an increase in speed here, though the difference was minimal. However, for chunkier gravel or heavily rooted forest sections, the comfort, composure, and puncture protection of a wider tire (e.g., 45mm, 50mm, or even 2.2″), run at a lower pressure, really comes into play.

On the bike, you will need:

Multi-tool: A multi-tool will be helpful if you need to repair your bike.

Pump: A small pump for the race and a stand pump for the day before.

Tire levers: Tire levers remove your tires from the rims.

Patch kit: A patch kit can repair a flat tire.

Tubeless plug kit: A tubeless plug kit can fix a tire with a large hole.

CO2 inflator: A CO2 inflator can quickly inflate your tires.

Other Stuff

Clothing: Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that will protect you from the weather. Consider packing a rain jacket and pants and a warm layer for colder weather.

Shoes: Choose the shoes that you are riding within your training. Don’t try anything new on race day.

Helmet: There is a trend of using aero helmets in races. It depends on the nature of the race and the number and lengths of the climbs.

Sunglasses: Sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun, wind, and dust, which is crucial in many gravel events.

Gloves: Gloves are important as you will need the ability to maneuver on some off-road roads.

Water: Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. You can use a water pack on your back (which is even helping in the aero position) or the ‘traditional’ two bottles.

Food: Pack snacks, gels, energy bars, and everything else you use during the training. Again, the rule here is the same – nothing new on race day.

First aid kit: A first aid kit is essential in case of any accidents.

Extra Items

Phone: Bring your phone with you in case you need to call for help.

GPS device: A GPS device can help you stay on track and remain aware of your location.

Lights: Bring lights in case you are riding in the dark.

Cash: if you need to buy food or drinks and the remote places aren’t taking credit cards or Apple/Google Pay.

ID: Bring your ID in case you need to show it to race officials.

Race number: Make sure you have your race number attached to your bike so it’s not putting too much drag. Try on the side of the frame – but check the rules first.

Additional tips for packing for a gravel race:

  • Pack light. You want to avoid weighing yourself down with unnecessary gear.
  • Pack everything in a way that is easy to access. You want to avoid fumbling around for your extra water bottle or snacks when you’re in the middle of a race.
  • Practice packing your gear ahead of time. This will help you ensure you have everything you need and that everything is packed in a way that works for you.

Last but not least, a positive attitude!

Have a positive attitude and enjoy the race as much as you can.

Put a big simple and go for it!
