In IoT projects, collecting data is usually not the biggest challenge.
Sensors can measure temperature, vibration, pressure, location, movement, and dozens of other signals. The more difficult problem is often determining exactly which physical entity produced a particular piece of data.
That is where an identification engine can play an important role.
What Is an Identification Engine?
An identification engine is a software layer that determines the identity of an entity using one or more available data sources.
The entity could be:
- A machine
- A vehicle
- A component
- A product
- A shipment
- A tool
- An industrial asset
Depending on the implementation, identification can use RFID, barcodes, computer vision, sensor metadata, GPS, device IDs, databases, or combinations of these sources.
The goal is to turn an ambiguous data point into something meaningful.
