After months of delay, Pebble Round 2 shipments begin

The Pebble Round 2, a $199 smartwatch running open-source PebbleOS, has started shipping after months of production delays.

About 1,400 apps and watch faces have been created specifically for the new watch; another 3,000 programs and faces for the original Pebble Time Round can adapt automatically to its display.

The launch brings an existing software ecosystem to a refreshed device.

The model was introduced in January as a modern version of the original Pebble Time Round. It costs $199 and features a 1,3-inch color e-paper display, a slim stainless steel case, and PebbleOS software, which the community can contribute to. It was originally scheduled to ship in May.

When will the remaining watches be shipped?

Production is being done in batches, according to Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky. After the first 200 watches, another 1.000 are expected to go into production after the Chinese holiday, from October 1 to 7. They are expected to ship in late October.

Production of the remaining pre-orders is scheduled to begin in early November, with shipments expected later that month.

How long does the battery last and what does it offer?

Pebble says the current version of PebbleOS offers about eight days of use on average. That's down from the 14 days it initially advertised. That can be extended to 10 to 14 days if you turn off the touchscreen and motion-activated lighting, and choose a watch face that refreshes less frequently. The company is also developing other improvements to the software.

The display offers a larger viewing area, thinner bezels, and better contrast than the original Pebble Time Round. The watch is touch-enabled or has physical buttons, and touch can be disabled.

Approximately 1.400 apps and watch faces have been created specifically for the Pebble Round 2. Another 3.000 apps and watch faces that were made for the original Pebble Time Round can automatically adapt to the new screen.

Pebble's updated tool lets developers build apps entirely in JavaScript. CloudPebble, a browser-based app creation tool, is also back. Pebble is still inviting community input on PebbleOS and its mobile app.

The stainless steel case measures 41,5mm in diameter and accepts 14mm or 20mm wide straps. A silicone strap is included in the box. Those who have pre-ordered can add a nubuck leather strap for an additional $5 as a thank you for your patience.

The Pebble Round 2 counts steps and tracks sleep. Pebble makes it clear that it's not intended to compete with specialized sports watches with more advanced health or location features.
