aerynOS has released version 2026.11, bringing updated desktop environments including Budgie 10.10.4, KDE Plasma 6.8.2, GNOME 51.1, and COSMIC 1.11.

The ISO refresh features Linux kernel 7.2.14, Mesa 26.2.6, and introduces an experimental terminal-based installation tool with declarative system model support.

Workspace options

The new release adds Budgie to version 10.10.4, following a collaboration with project manager Joshua Strobl. Users can now choose between four different desktop environments during installation: Budgie, COSMIC, GNOME, and KDE Plasma. Meanwhile, the system repositories offer around a dozen options for those who prefer to build their own.

Existing options have also been updated. KDE Plasma has been upgraded to version 6.8.2, GNOME to 51.1, and COSMIC Desktop has been upgraded to version 1.11 and now includes COSMIC Viewer. GNOME 51 serves as the base environment for the new release.

New test installer

The update introduces a new, experimental installer that runs from within the terminal. The new tool supports automatic disk formatting, Wi-Fi and keyboard setup, as well as the ability to use a custom file to specify which programs to install.

The previous program remains accessible, while the new experimental tool does not currently support disk encryption or dual-boot installation. Also, the no-graphical installation options have been removed from the new version.

Changes in program management

The way you manage programs has been reorganized around a new system, with new commands for installing, removing, and managing repositories. The new structure is not backward compatible, meaning that old commands don't work the same way.

System updates

The new release includes the Linux kernel 7.2.14, while the more stable Linux kernel 6.18.60 remains available in the repositories. Many other parts have also been updated, such as the programs for graphics, sound, web browsing and application execution. Support for firmware updates has also been added to supported devices.

Target Audience

The creators remind that the system is still in development and is not ready for everyday use. The new version is mainly aimed at those who want to try out the new features first.
