The 2022 third-generation Amazon Fire TV Cube costs $139.99 and supports Alexa voice control, an HDMI input for connected devices, and video playback up to 4K60 with Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
It supports Wi-Fi 6E but not Apple AirPlay or Google Cast for local streaming.
Design and connections
Unlike the glossy plastic models of the past, the 2022 version has a fabric cover, offering a look reminiscent of Amazon's Echo speakers. An HDMI input port has been added to the back of the device, which allows you to connect external devices, such as game consoles. This way, the image from the console passes through the Fire TV Cube, allowing you to use Alexa's features even while playing games.
Capabilities and control
The device's core functionality is voice control for opening apps, searching for content, and navigating menus. Beyond entertainment, the Fire TV Cube also acts as a smart home hub, allowing you to control devices like lights or thermostats, and it also supports video calling.
The included remote includes dedicated buttons for direct access to popular services like Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix. However, the device has one limitation: it doesn't support local streaming of mobile content via Apple AirPlay or Google Cast.
Specifications
Inside the device is an octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The device supports video playback up to 4K60 resolution, while being compatible with high-quality image standards such as Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. For internet connection, it supports Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz) technology, offering connection options on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.
