Amazon Echo Show 21: Is the new larger smart display worth $400?

Amazon has launched the Echo Show 21, a 21-inch wall-mounted smart display running Fire TV and Alexa.

The device supports various streaming platforms and includes a 13-megapixel camera with auto-framing.

While the screen size is the primary upgrade over the existing 15.6-inch Echo Show 15, the hardware internals and software features are largely shared between the two models.

Developers working with Fire TV or Alexa-integrated interfaces may note the display's 1080p resolution and lack of local Miracast/WiDi streaming support.

The screen measures 21 inches diagonally, about 5,4 inches larger than the 15,6-inch screen on the Echo Show 15. The Echo Show 15 costs $299,99 and, according to the review, is otherwise identical to the larger model.

The Echo Show 21 is primarily intended for wall mounting and does not come with a stand. Amazon's Premium Adjustable Stand is sold separately for $100. It allows you to change the horizontal and vertical angle of the screen, but not its height.

The home screen can display customizable widgets for calendar, music, Fire TV apps, and smart home devices. A sensor changes what’s displayed when no one is nearby, and the user can choose which screens to display. There are also separate profiles for different users and automatic switching via facial recognition when the camera is active, or via voice recognition.

Fire TV supports services like Prime Video, Apple TV+, Crunchyroll, Disney+, Netflix, Twitch, and YouTube. However, it cannot stream videos from the user's devices.

The 13-megapixel wide-angle camera automatically adjusts the frame to keep the user in the picture. It supports video and voice calls to other Echo devices, Alexa app users, Skype, and most phones. When its cover is not closed, the user can also view its image remotely via the Alexa app. It does not send motion alerts or automatically record video.

The screen has a resolution of 1080p, and the review describes the image as clear and bright. When displaying photos, it looks like a natural frame on the wall. The speakers can fill a room at medium to high volumes, but deep bass is limited and some loud sounds distort.

The Echo Show 10 costs $249,99. It doesn't mount to the wall, but it has better sound and a motorized stand that turns the screen toward the user.
