Amazon Prime Video is growing into a large and profitable business

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that Prime Video is profitable on its own and on track for tens of billions in revenue, driven by high-performing original series, major film releases, and large-scale live sports broadcasting.

The development comes four years after Amazon acquired the MGM film studio for $8,5 billion. The company's film studios have grossed more than $1,2 billion in global box office this year.

Cinematic successes and failures

A key driver of this trend was the Ryan Gosling-starring film "Project Hail Mary," based on the Andy Weir book. The film grossed an estimated $684 million worldwide and became the studio's highest-grossing release. In contrast, "Melania" was a commercial failure for the company.

The course of television series

In the series sector, Jassi singled out popular titles such as "Carrie," "The Summer I Turned Pretty," "The Boys," "Off Campus," "Fallout" and "Reacher." The fourth season of "Reacher" attracted 66 million viewers worldwide in its first 28 days of broadcast, while filming for the fifth season is underway and a sixth season has already been planned.

The growth in sports broadcasting

Sports broadcasts also play an important role in the platform's appeal, as Prime Video broadcasts matches such as NASCAR, The Masters golf tournament, UEFA Champions League, Thursday Night Football and the NBA.
