Apple Music celebrates the 25th anniversary of the original iPod with a fully interactive virtual iPod easter egg featuring a working click wheel and playable song clips, hidden within error pages on its website.

The digital return of the iPod

When someone visits a page that doesn't exist on the Apple Music website, a message appears inviting them to try a virtual version of the historical device instead of the classic error message.

The virtual iPod features a fully functional classic scroll wheel and traditional buttons for menu, back, forward, select and play. Inside the software are options for playlists, artists, songs and settings, along with 1.029 songs that can be listened to in ninety-second snippets.

What does the virtual device contain?

The device is presented as if it is filled with 4,5 gigabytes of music, bringing to mind hits mainly from the 2000s and early 2010s. Among the artists included we find names such as Evanescence, Slipknot, Ricky Martin, Shaggy, Sum 41 and The Ting Tings.

Apple also created special playlists, such as a collection of 22 iconic songs from the iPod, as well as playlists dedicated exclusively to the music of 2001. Users can browse songs, enable shuffle or repeat, turn on the screen backlight, and mute the scroll wheel sound.

An interesting detail is that the song "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay appears listed twice under the same artist, which is reminiscent of the old synchronization problems of the first devices, although it has not been clarified whether this was done by mistake or on purpose.

It remains unknown at this time whether Apple intends to keep this feature after the holidays are over.
