Apple has announced the HomeView, a new smart home interface launching November 13.
The device utilizes a 1:1 square display and runs a custom software stack blending watchOS and CarPlay architecture.
Developers should note that CarPlay-compatible applications can be deployed on the device, which also features an integrated Safari browser and AirPlay support.
The hardware is configured for both wall and countertop installations, with pre-orders currently live.
The challenge of video viewing
The square shape limits the viewing experience for widescreen videos, such as most movies and TV shows. Since this content is designed for horizontal viewing, displaying it on a square screen leaves large gaps at the top and bottom, making viewing less comfortable.
Functions and software
The device's software resembles a combination of Apple Watch and CarPlay. This allows HomeView to run apps that are already available on CarPlay, while the device supports AirPlay and has a built-in Safari browser for web access. The square surface is designed to accommodate everyday tasks, such as managing your smart home, viewing calendars or reading recipes, without the content looking "crammed".
Availability and options
HomeView will be available in stores on November 13, 2026, priced at $299. Those interested can pre-order the device now. Apple will offer HomeView in two different versions, so that users can choose the one that best suits their needs: one for countertop placement and one for wall mounting.
