Apple releases iOS 27.0.1 first, but upgrade remains optional

Apple’s Software Update screen now lists iOS 27.0.1 as the primary update for iPhones running iOS 26, while iOS 26.7.1 remains under “Also Available.” The upgrade to iOS 27 is optional; Apple recommends at least 26.7.1 for users staying on iOS 26 to get the latest security fixes.

Where are the iOS 26 versions?

In Settings > General > Software Update, iOS 26.7.1 now appears lower down in the “Also Available” section. The change, reported by MacRumors, reverses the previous order: since the release of iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, iOS 26 versions appeared as the main update, while iOS 27 versions were in the “Also Available” section.

Upgrading to iOS 27 remains optional. Those who choose to stay on iOS 26 can install iOS 26.7.1, the minimum recommended version for the latest security patches. In a previous post, Techblog reported that the release fixes a previously exploited security flaw.

Apple has not released figures on how many iPhones have iOS 27 installed. The new menu row indicates that the company is now more heavily promoting the newer version, but it does not disclose the number of users who have upgraded.
