Archer Aviation completes test flights of electric aircraft in California

Archer Aviation completed a multi-stop flight tour in Northern California with its Midnight eVTOL aircraft, reaching speeds up to 131mph.

The tour highlights ongoing flight testing and progress toward FAA type certification.

The company said the flight time from Oakland to San Francisco's Marina District is ten minutes, although the area has not had an operational air station since 1944. During the three-day test, the aircraft reached speeds of up to 210 kilometers per hour and covered a distance of more than 320 kilometers.

The Midnight has 12 rotors: six for vertical takeoff and landing and six that rotate for horizontal flight. The company's next plans include testing in Los Angeles in preparation for the US Civil Aviation Authority's new aircraft integration program.

Archer has been selected as the official air taxi provider for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, has announced plans for air taxi networks in Miami and ideas for services in New York, is also pursuing operations in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and has a list of airline partnerships.

The company applied for formal certification of the aircraft in March 2022 and says it has completed three of the four phases of the process. However, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby expressed doubts about integrating such flights into the airspace of busy airports.

Financially, the company announced a second-quarter net loss of $263 million on revenue of $5 million.
