Colossal Biosciences: How GenoMorph AI can bring back the dodo

Colossal Biosciences has unveiled GenoMorph, an AI platform built to facilitate de-extinction by analyzing complex biological datasets.

The system integrates 3D morphometric data and genomic sequences from over 70 bird species to identify precise DNA editing targets.

Developers and researchers interested in biological data pipelines can observe how the platform addresses the challenge of reconstructing species like the dodo using limited DNA samples through advanced computational modeling and targeted editing.

The challenge of lack of data

GenoMorph was designed to address the lack of comprehensive genetic data. In the case of the dodo, for example, the genetic material has not been well preserved due to the tropical climate it lived in. To fill this gap, the platform leverages data from more than 70 bird species, combining genetic data and 3D measurements from their skulls.

So far, GenoMorph has identified about 2.300 points in DNA that could be targets for genetic interventions to produce the dodo's characteristics.

New method for faster results

The company is also introducing a method for delivering genetic editing tools to bird embryos via tiny particles known as lipid nanoparticles, allowing scientists to test the effects of genetic changes directly, without having to wait for the birds to reach adulthood.

Colossal is using the Nicobar pigeon, the dodo's closest living relative, in its research. The company maintains a colony of 36 birds. According to the company, it has already succeeded in creating cells that develop into eggs and sperm in this species.

Support from investors

Investor Peter Diamandis founded NeoGenesis Capital to support businesses that use Colossal's technology and platform.
