Counterpoint: Global PC shipments down 21%

Counterpoint reports a 21% year-over-year decline in global PC shipments for Q3 2026, dropping to 57 million units.

Rising component costs linked to AI demand and tariffs are driving hardware price increases, leading consumers and businesses to postpone system upgrades.

Counterpoint also recorded a 13,8% decline compared to the second quarter of 2026. It predicts that shipments in the fourth quarter will be about 27% lower than the same period in 2025. Its research indicates that market difficulties may continue into 2027.

Why did shipments decrease?

Memory and other components have become more expensive. The cost increase is linked to demand from artificial intelligence and global tariffs. According to Minsoo Kang, senior analyst at Counterpoint, higher prices are leading consumers to postpone replacing their computers.

The decline follows a year of growth in PC shipments in 2025. Consumers also bought more PCs in early 2026, before prices rose.

Shipments per company

Shipments declined at all major companies listed, but not to the same extent:

  • Lenovo: It remains the largest company in the market, despite a 23% decrease in its shipments compared to last year.
  • HP: Its shipments decreased by 31% year-on-year.
  • Dell: Its shipments decreased by 25% year-on-year.
  • Apple: Its shipments fell by 11%, but its market share increased. The report likely attributes its better performance to the more affordable MacBook Neo.
  • ASUS: Its shipments fell 7%, the smallest decline among major manufacturers.

Separate data from research firm IDC shows that global shipments fell 20,1% in the third quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. According to IDC, they were also 9,1% lower than the second quarter, although the third quarter typically has more shipments than the second.
