Helion secures $175 million from the US for semiconductors and power management systems

Fusion startup Helion secured $175M in federal funding under the CHIPS Act to develop advanced semiconductors and power electronics aimed at reducing electrical losses and scaling fusion system output.

Today's components typically lose 5% to 10% of the electrical energy that passes through them. According to Helion CEO David Kirtley, if losses were cut in half, the power produced by the fusion system could double.

The funding was provided by the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS Act. More than $100 million will be allocated to Washington state for research and development of semiconductors and new ways to incorporate them into products. About $80 million will support similar research in Vermont, in collaboration with GlobalFoundries. GlobalFoundries also received more than $9,5 million separately from the federal government for gallium nitride semiconductors.

Helion is working to complete its first power plant, Orion, by 2028 to provide electricity to Microsoft. The research being funded now will not be completed in time for its results to be used on Orion when it goes into operation.
