A recent incident targeting a French blood bank storage facility demonstrates the physical risks of compromised industrial and environmental control systems, where attackers attempted to alter temperature settings before an on-call technician intervened.
During the attack, the attackers attempted to alter the settings of the cooling systems. While the storage units should normally be kept deep-frozen at minus 30 degrees Celsius to safely store donor blood samples, they were reprogrammed to raise their temperature to 110 degrees Celsius.
The worst was avoided thanks to the timely intervention of a technician on duty. The technician noticed during the night the unusual and dangerous rise in temperature in the cold storage rooms and immediately notified the authorities.
The French Ministry of Health announced that, thanks to the immediate detection of the problem, there were no negative impacts on the operation of services.
