Attackers targeted refrigeration service provider CoolWorld, altering internet-connected freezer settings used by the French Blood Service from -30°C to 110°C.
Staff intervention successfully prevented service disruption and product loss.
The incident occurred on the night of November 1. The facility was storing blood samples from donors and blood for transfusions. The French Blood Service told AP News that no blood products were lost. 110°C was the setting chosen by the perpetrators; it is not known whether the freezers actually reached that temperature. No significant immediate damage appears to have been caused.
The freezers are connected to the internet to alert managers when equipment breaks down. According to the French Ministry of Health, staff noticed the change in time and prevented a loss of service.
Similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks involving freezers in French supermarkets, as well as stores in Estonia, the Netherlands, Ireland and Sweden, where millions of euros worth of food was thrown away.
