Samsung’s Direct voicemail for Galaxy phones running One UI 8.5 or later stores recordings on the device and can transcribe messages live.
Galaxy AI summaries are processed on servers by default, with an option to keep that processing on-device.
The feature is off by default and requires available phone storage.
While the caller is leaving a message, you can watch the transcript live and respond before it ends. You can also send an incoming call directly to voicemail. Messages appear in your call history, where you can listen to the recording and see its text. Galaxy AI can create a summary, while Audio Eraser helps reduce noise in the recording.
Activation and options
The feature is not active by default. Open the Phone app, tap the three dots, and select Settings , then Direct voicemail . There, turn on the switch. In the same menu, the Auto send to voicemail option determines how long the phone will wait before sending an unanswered call to voicemail: 20, 10, or 5 seconds.
The transcription automatically recognizes the language. English is available by default, while you can download other languages, such as Dutch, Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese. The source does not specify whether Greek is included in the list.
Galaxy AI's summary is initially created on servers. If you enable the Process data only on device setting , it is processed on your phone. Recordings, regardless of this setting, are stored locally.
Constraints
Direct voicemail does not work when the phone is turned off, has no signal, or is out of memory, as messages are recorded and stored on the device. It is also not available when you are already on another call. Instead, your provider's voicemail messages are stored on their servers.
You can't record your own greeting; the caller hears the same automated message in a robotic voice every time. So while live transcription, summaries, and audio tools are useful, Direct voicemail doesn't cover all the situations in which you might need your provider's voicemail.
