Emails and old passwords of Wexford employees found on the dark web

Staff credentials for Wexford County Council surfaced on the dark web via automated monitoring.

Officials confirmed the data stems from an old Russian third-party breach forum, with no internal systems compromised.

Officials have clarified that the council's systems were not attacked. This information comes from previous leaks from other companies and services and was previously circulated on Russian criminal forums.

How the data was found

The issue was uncovered thanks to a central dark web monitoring system managed by the Local Government Management Service.

The passwords found were old and did not meet the council's current security requirements. However, as a precautionary measure, officials have contacted all employees whose details were found, asking them to change their passwords.
