The EU is negotiating with China over restrictions on German company Sindlhauser Materials, part of ASML’s supply chain and reportedly at risk of closure.
Bloomberg reports that the EU may also ease restrictions on an unnamed Chinese company accused of helping Russia.
The case offers a concrete look at how trade restrictions and semiconductor supply chains intersect; any EU move to lift restrictions requires unanimous support from member states.
In return, the European Union is reportedly considering lifting restrictions it had placed on a Chinese company accused of helping Russia in its war in Ukraine. According to a Bloomberg report on October 14, the issue was discussed during a visit to Beijing by European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maroš Šefčovič.
What the agreement provides
The European Union is expected to make the first move, although any decision to lift sanctions requires unanimous support from all member states. The two sides also agreed to share more information on future export restrictions.
