Figma has announced new AI-driven capabilities, including the public beta of Code Layers, which leverages AI to convert design elements into code.
The update also introduces Figma Specs, enabling designers to build Markdown-based documentation with embedded code and diagrams.
These features aim to bridge the gap between design systems and implementation, facilitating smoother developer handoffs.
Design guides with Figma Specs
The new Figma Specs tool allows teams to create formal design rules documents within the platform. These documents act as a reference for the entire team, as users can embed diagrams, code samples, and more. The goal is to make these rules understandable to both human collaborators and AI systems, so that designs are consistent.
Automatic conversion of drawings to code
The company also launched Code Layers, which has been in experimental mode since June, in public testing. The tool uses artificial intelligence to turn visual designs into code, making it easier for developers to bring what their creative partners have designed to life.
Payload Integration
Additionally, Figma is integrating Payload, a content management tool it acquired last year, into its platform. The addition allows users to better connect their designs with content displayed on dynamic websites.

The announcements were made at the Config conference held in India. The choice of location was not accidental, as India is now the company's largest user market outside the United States.
