Firefox 159: New shortcuts, easy access to passwords and fixes

Firefox 159 is now available, bringing a sidebar password access default, new tab-search shortcuts, and native macOS share picker integration.

The release also addresses memory usage issues on Linux with AMD graphics and fixes HTTP/3 fallback bugs.

New shortcuts and access to codes

The update adds a new keyboard shortcut for searching through open tabs. Windows and Linux users can press Ctrl+Shift+A, while macOS users can use Cmd+Shift+A. Due to this change, the shortcut for add-ons and themes has moved to Ctrl+Shift+F for Windows and Linux, and to Cmd+Shift+E for macOS.

Additionally, saved passwords are now directly accessible from the program's sidebar by default.

Website monitoring and gradual rollout

A new feature within Smart Window allows users to monitor websites for changes, such as price drops or products returning to stock, using the command /watchThe management of these tasks is done through the management about:smartwindowtasks, while Mozilla notes that this feature is being rolled out gradually.

Fixes for Linux, Windows, and macOS

For Linux users, the new release fixes an issue where clicking on a tab could detach it into a separate window. It also addresses excessive memory usage on systems with AMD graphics when viewing maps or locations, as well as similar issues in applications like Zoom when windows remained minimized.

Additionally, an issue was fixed on Linux and Windows where menus and panels continued to display fade-in effects even though animations were disabled on the operating system. A more general issue was resolved where websites would fail to load when HTTP/3 connections were rejected instead of switching to HTTP/2.

On Mac computers, Firefox 159 now uses the operating system's built-in AirDrop and messaging. In addition, issues with controller gesture recognition in online games and issues where Apple's writing tools were inserting the contents of the clipboard instead of rewritten text have been fixed.

Improvements for Android

The Android version brings improvements that address frequent tab reloading, particularly on Xiaomi and Redmi devices. It also fixes video playback issues on some websites and issues where alarms would go silent while playing videos.
