Flock: Company founder defends surveillance cameras despite backlash

Flock’s cameras do not use facial recognition, according to founder and CEO Garrett Langley, but they can detect and track people.

At TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, Langley defended the company amid privacy backlash, contract cancellations and staff cuts.

He said Flock does not set usage policies for local authorities, putting the cameras’ capabilities and decisions about their use at the center of the debate.

The company's stance on safety

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026, Langley argued that the technology helps reduce crime, likening its use to the development of autonomous vehicles, arguing that the issues raised should not hinder technological progress in the field of safety.

Regarding responsibility for the use of the devices, Langley clarified that the company does not impose usage policies on local authorities that purchase them, leaving the decisions up to them.

Clarifications on camera capabilities

The head of Flock also addressed public concerns, citing misinformation. He clarified that the company's cameras do not have a facial recognition function, but admitted that the devices have the ability to locate and track people.
