A used PlayStation 5 Pro listing at GameStop is priced at $1,399.99—$500 above Sony’s current reported price and nearly twice the 2024 launch price.

The report links rising demand to the approach of GTA 6 and attributes the wider shortage to memory-component demand and production problems.

The PS5 Pro was released in 2024. Its price has increased by $200 since then, so the GameStop price is almost double the original price. According to a report by German website Playfront in September 2026, internal Sony memos to distribution partners predict that the global shortage of memory components will continue until at least early 2027.

The shortage of memory components is attributed to increased demand due to the boom in artificial intelligence, but also to production issues. A JPMorgan report in August 2026 predicted that prices of these components would have increased by 400% globally by the end of 2026, compared to the launch of the PS5 Pro in 2024.

The console's high prices aren't limited to GameStop. Best Buy is selling the PS5 Pro for over $1.500, while Walmart has an unboxed model for $1.200. On eBay, prices often top $1.100.

What does the PS5 Pro offer?

The console offers 4K resolution at 60 frames per second and 2TB of storage. It also has improved graphics, with more realistic lighting and shadows.

One of its features improves the image with the help of artificial intelligence. The newest version of it is enabled by default. However, to use these improvements, you need games that are specifically marked for the PS5 Pro. According to the report, few games use the newest version of the feature directly.

In a blog post in October 2026, Sony announced that it would bring a similar image enhancement feature to the regular PS5, along with stability improvements.

The increases also affect other markets

The accuracy isn't just about consoles. A September 2026 report by The Economist reported that the consumer price index for the "computer software and accessories" category had risen by 31%. The price of a single PlayStation 5 also rose by $150, about 30%.

In October 2026, sales of video game hardware hit a 13-year low. Analysts were already questioning whether the PS5 Pro's improvements were worth its initial price tag.
