Google is disabling artificial intelligence in schools starting next year

Google plans to keep AI tools off for K–12 students next year unless school administrators explicitly enable them.

The policy also exposes a product-design constraint: schools that restrict AI altogether will lose Google Search, because AI features are integrated into it.

This change comes after discussions with schools, educators, experts and relevant bodies, and concerns services such as Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and Google Search.

Connecting search with artificial intelligence

Schools that choose to completely restrict AI will no longer be able to use Google Search, as AI features are now fully integrated into it.

Chris Phillips, Google's vice president of education, confirmed that search and artificial intelligence are deeply intertwined. Students in these schools will see a message from their school informing them that search is unavailable.

What's next for schools?

The company said it would provide more details to schools in the coming months, before the changes are implemented.
